ASU game thread

HUSKIES WIN, HUSKIES WIN — UW takes a huge step toward the Pac-10 title by hanging on to win in overtime 73-70. UW hit 25-31 free throws and 15-20 in the second half to help clinch the win. Brockman had 21 and 11, Pondexter 10 and 12 and Dentmon 16 points — all after halftime.
Jeff Pendergraph had 24 and 13 for ASU but fouled out late in the game.
James Harden had 19 points but after going 5-10 in the first half finished just 7-19 and like Pendergraph, fouled out in OT, helplessly watching the final seconds tick away.
ASU JUST 4-21 ON THREE-POINTERS — That will prove to be a critical stat in this one. UW’s athleticism and length may make the difference.
ASU WITH NO REBOUNDS SO FAR IN OT — A critical offensive rebound for the Huskies has UW ahead 68-63 with 1:34 to play and ASU has no rebounds at this point in OT.
HARDEN FOULS OUT — Harden is out with 2:46 to play on a nice drive through the lane by Dentmon. It is UW’s ability to penetrate that may win it the game here in overtime. UW leads 67-63 after two Dentmon free throws.
UW 0-1 IN OTS THIS YEAR — You probably don’t have to be reminded which game that was.
OVERTIME — Wow, a tough way to not get the win in regulation. But with the ASU foul trouble you would think UW still has the edge.
FRANTIC FINISH — Looks like we are headed to another really frantic finish as ASU has a 56-54 lead with 3:25 — ASU hadn’t led since the opening minute before finally taking it with 5:50 to play.
Duties for the paper are going to keep me from the blog for a little while.
ASU LEAVING HARDEN, PENDERGRAPH IN — The big two have four fouls, but Sendek is leaving them in and ASU has cut the lead to 52-51 with 6:35 to go.
HARDEN OUT WITH FOUR — Harden appeared caught up in a mano a mano matchup with Overton and lost when he was called for a chaerge with 9:06 to play. He’s now out of the game for what could be a really critical portion of the game.
And now at 8:50, Pendergraph has four. The calls — the big ones, I guess I should add — are going UW’s way tonight.
HARDEN FRUSTRATED — Harden just had the ball swiped away and forced into a turnover by Justin Holiday and he appears to be getting frustrated. ASU coach Sendek called a time out to calm his team with UW up 50-42 with 10:59 to play.
UW UP 48-42 WITH 11:56 TO PLAY — Huskies had an eight-point lead but it’s down to six and ASU has the ball. Harden has yet to score this half but ASU is getting points inside. Dentmon got his first basket on a drive to the hoop with 12:49 to play and has three points.
WILL DEPTH MATTER? — Pendergraph is leaving with his third foul and ASU has to turn to Eric Boateng with 13:15 to play and th Huskies up 46-40. UW has made 17-19 free throws to ASU’s 8-10.
HUSKIES REGAINING CONTROL — A good first four minutes for UW as they take a 40-36 lead with two free throws by Brockman after the time out. ASU is 1-7 to start the half and Harden 0-2.
HARDEN GETS THIRD FOUL — Good sign for UW here early as the first two possessions result in free throws for UW guards — the latter when Harden got his third foul. UW leads 38-34 with 18:12 to play.
FIRST FIVE MINUTES KEY? — I’ve written it a lot this year, but UW has often taken control of games in the first five minutes of the second half. ASU definitely had the momentum to end the first half so.
DAWG PACK YELLS FOR HEAPS — The inevitable “We want Heaps” chant from the Dawg Pack led to what appeared to be a brief wave. He’s sitting in the Dawg Pack actually and was just given a Husky shirt to wear, having had on a Skyline hoody for the first half.
Sarkisian was also in his seat behind the hoop near the UW bench in the first half.
UW LEADS 35-34 AT HALFTIME — Huskies barely ahead after leading 24-12 about midway through. UW’s offense has come to a standstill with the Huskies at 12-34 for the half and 1-10 on three-pointers. Dentmon is 0-6 and has no points and IT 2-9 with seven points.
Harden has 15 for ASU and Pendergraph 13 making up for minimal contribution from the rest of the team.
Rebounds are tied at 18.
ASU is shooting 12-29 and just 2-10 on threes and has nine turnovers to four for UW.
HARDEN LEADS ASU BACK —- Harden seems determined to prove UW doesn’t have the answer to stopping him, scoring 15 points this half in leading ASU almost all the way back, UW leads 34-33 with 50.8 to go in the half, Harden scoring 9 of ASU’s last 11 points.
HUSKIES LEAD TO BATTLE 9-4 — Huskies have six steals en route to a 32-27 lead with 3:01 to go and Thomas at the line after the time out. Dentmon has yet to score for the Huskies, but Brockman has 11 and Pondexter eight. Pendergraph has 11 for ASU and Harden 10 but the rest of the team is 2-9 from the field with just six points.
UW STILL AHEAD — ASU cut the lead to 26-23 but the Huskies have responded to scored four in a row and lead 30-25 with 4:00 to go. Brockman has 11 and six.
NOBODY SHOOTING WELL — ASU is 0-7 on three-pointers UW 1-9 with the Huskies holding a 24-16 lead with 7:49 left in the first half. Dentmon is 0-6 for the Huskies a couple under heavy pressure but also just missing a few, as well. UW is 8-20 overall, ASU 7-18.
ASU STRUGGLING JUST TO GET THE BALL UP COURT — UW’s defense is at an especially fevered pitch right now as Derek Glasser is having trouble just getting the ball across halfcourt. ASU is getting nothing easy.
HUSKIES NOW UP 21-10 — UW is threatening to end this one early with a 14-1 run allowing them to take a 21-8 lead. It’s now 21-10 and ASU has the ball with 11:45 left. ASU has five turnovers andn is 0-6 on three-pointers as the Huskies are playing suffocating defense right now.
UW ON 10-1 RUN — Pondexter has a game-high six points, all coming in a 10-1 run that has UW ahead 17-8 with 13:21 left. Two of the baskets came in transition following turnovers, the last when he penetrated into the middle of ASU’s zone and finger-rolled it in.
HUSKIES PLAYING D — UW has forced turnoveres on three straight possessions en route to an 8-0 run and a 15-7 lead. On the last play, Overton simply stripped the ball out of Harden’s hands. Right now, UW looks like the more athletic team out front.
UW 1-5 ON THREES — UW leads 5-4 but if there is an worriesome sign it’s that all of UW’s officials shots are three-pointers — Brockman was fouled on a shot inside. But that’s not a percentage Romar is going to like long. And what I mean is percentage of threes of shots taken — UW is falling prey to the zone so far. It’s 5-4 UW at the first time out at the 15:44 mark.
HARDEN GETS A QUICK CALL — First play of the game is a Harden drive and a Gant foul. Harden looks like he’ll be more aggressive this time.
A FULL HOUSE — While this is officially the fifth sellout of the season, it seems like this is the most full this place has been all season. Often, there are a visible open seats in places, but not really seeing any tonight.
MCMILLAN FOR ABBOTT — One change to the ASU starting lineup as Jamelle McMillan, son of Nate and an O’Dea High grad, is in the lineup in place of Ty Abbott. McMillan has been shooting it well of late and Abbott slumping all season so that’s surely the reason.
WIGGS IN THE HOUSE — Sitting prominently in the Dawg Pack tonight is UW walk-on linebacker Fred Wiggs — he’s in the front row must a little left of mid-court. He’s the brother of ’90s-era DL Sekou Wiggs.
NICE ANTHEM — The anthem tonight was the Kenmore Symphonic Choir. One of the members is the daughter of UW public address announcer Eric Radovich.
BIGGEST REGULAR SEASON GAME OF THE ROMAR ERA? — A friend of mine just walked by and said he thinks it is — bigger even than Stanford in 2004. I still think UW needed to win that game to get into the NCAA tourney which got all of this started, so I think that was pretty darn big. Of course, could be bigger games to come if UW pulls this one out.
NIGHT OF UPSETS? — Looks like WSU is going to take down Arizona in Pullman, ahead 63-50 with about three minutes to go. And Stanford is up early on UCLA 17-8 — don’t think that will last but who knows with how shaky UCLA has been lately.
PRE-GAME — Check out the pre-game chat for a lot of hopefully interesting thoughts on the game tonight. I’ll try to do that as often as I can if there is interest.
It’s about 22 minutes to tip and the teams are on the court and the arena filling up. Certainly an air of expectation in the air.
