Arizona game thread

HEAPS AT GAME — Jake Heaps was at the game today, along with his parents.
Also there were Tony Wroten and Abdul Gaddy though I never saw Josh Smith. Wroten and Gaddy were in the locker room after the game being shown around by Cameron Dollar.
QUICK POST-GAME QUOTES — Said Romar: “Another team effort by our guys. Our crowd was unbeliveable today, they just willed us to a victory. We got down but we continued to persevere, working together.
“Nothing was bigger than (Brockman’s) free throws down the stretch.”
Romar said containing Nic Wise was the key after he got 29 in the first game and felt his team did that today.
Brockman said the team can celebrate a little but that “we still have a big one left to finish this thing off.”
HUSKIES CLINCH A SHARE OF THE PAC-1O TITLE — UW has beaten Arizona 83-78 to clinch at least a share of their first Pac-10 title since 1985. They can get it outright next week.
IT and Brockman led the Huskies with 19 points each while Pondexter had 12.
UW was down by 10 points twice early in the second half before rallying as three Arizona players fouled out.
More later.
UW 16-2 IN REBOUNDS LAST EIGHT MINUTES — A big reason for the comeback.
BUDINGER FOULS OUT — At the 2:38 mark and Brockman hits both free throws to make it 73-70.
ANOTHER FRANTIC FINISH — UW has a 71-70 lead with 3:56 to play and IT will be at the line after Budinger picked up his fourth foul. But Hill is coming back in the game, the sprain apparently not as bad as it looked.
IT HOT — Thomas now has 19 points, 13 in the second half, and has hit 5-7 shots as UW has pulled ahead 71-68. UW now has a 37-30 edge in rebounds a huge turnaround and the other key to this run. UW is killing UA on the boards right now, especially since Hill went out.
UW HAS LEAD, HILL OUT — UW has taken its first lead of the second half at 63-62 and now Jordan Hill is out with an ankle injury at the 7:27 mark. He came down on MBA and appeared to twist his ankle. He had 21 points and eight boards.
HUSKIES COME ALIVE — UW right back in it. A 14-6 run keyed by Brockman has UW within 62-60 at the 8:32 mark. JB now has 14 points and nine rebounds after having five and five at the half.
UA WINNING REBOUNDING BATTLE 29-25 — UW hasn’t quite been the dominant rebounding team of late that it was earlier in the year, evidence again so far today as UW has a four-rebound edge at the 10:31 mark. ASU had a similar edge heading into the second half Thursday before UW came on to outboard the Devils 41-38.
HUSKIES CLINGING TO LIFE — UA has twice taken a 10-point lead but UW quickly answered each time and it’s 58-51 and UW has the ball with 11:15 to go.UW is 5-15 on free throws, UA 13-14, maybe the biggest difference in the game right now.
IT GETS GOING — After just six points in the first half, Thomas has seven in the first seven minutes of the second half to keep UW close at 52-46.
UA HOLDING THE LEAD — Wise is just 1-6 for the Wildcats, which you would have thought would be a good sign for the Huskies. But Hill has 19 and Budinger 13 allowing UA to hold on to a 47-41 lead with 14:57.
BUDINGER, WISE GET THIRD FOULS — Two of Arizona’s big three has picked up third fouls here in the first two minutes of the second half which could prove huge down the stretch.
DENTMON COOLING — Justin Dentmon is 1-4 this half, 1-3 on three-pointers. He is now 2-16 on threes in the last two and-a-half games and 7-28 overall.
WHAT TO SAY AT THE HALF? — I think one thing is to take better shots. Overton is playing fabulous D but he has seven shots so far — two more than any other Husky — a sign that the offense isn’t functioning as well as it should.
ARIZONA UP 36-32 AT THE HALF — Tough shooting half for the Dawgs as they are 12-33 overall and 4-10 on threes after starting off 4-6. They are keeping it close with scrappy play — getting to loose balls and forcing some charges that got Nic Wise out of the game for a while.
UW is also just 4-11 on free throws, a return to the bad old days from the line.
Arizona looks ready to play. But also note they were up three in Pullman the other night and lost by 16.
HUSKIES HIT LULL — UW has just one FT in the last five minutes as UW has pulled ahead 32-28 with 2:44 to play. Huskies just 10-29 shooting.
ARIZONA RALLIES — UW is now up 30-27 with 4:45 to go. UW is 3-9 at the FT line with IT 1-5.
UW UP 25-21 — At the 7:28 mark the Huskies the regained the lead with a 15-10 run. UW is up to 4-6 on three-pointers making up for 9-24 shooting overall. Overton, Thomas, Dentmon and Turner all have one each. For Overton, just his fourth this year in Pac-10 play.
HUSKIES STRUGGLING AT THE LINE — UA is already in the bonus so it will get a lot of FT opportunities today. But so far, UW is just 3-7. Thomas, who has been struggling a bit at the line of late is 1-3.
UW OVERCOMING POOR SHOOTING AGAIN — UW is just 6-20 shooting at the 10:41 mark. But scrappy play is keeping the Huskies in it as they are down just 17-16 having already enticed UA into seven fouls, three charges — two by Wise and one by Budinger.
VENOY MAKING IMPACT AGAIN — Overton’s quickness has pressured Wise into two offensive fouls and he’s about to come out of the game. It’s 13-13 with 12:28 to go. The two fouls came after Overton was whistled for a foul that had Romar up in arms trying to steal it from Wise.
ROMAR IN PURPLE — Don’t adjust your sets, that really is a purple coat on Romar. He usually wears it once a year.
ATMOSPHERE TAMER — The atmosphere seems a little tamer so far and a few seats not yet filled. Maybe it will pick up as the game progresses.
FAST-PACED SO FAR — UA is 4-7, UW 4-9 shooting and it’s tied at 9 with 15:49 to play. Budinger has five points and looks past his slump poor game the other night when he was 3-11 in Pullman.
LINEUPS — It’s the same as always for UW. Nic Wise, Zane Johnson, Kyle Fogg, Chad Budinger andn Jordan Hill for Arizona.
ARIZONA LOOKING FOR INTENSITY — Word in the Arizona papers today is that the Wildcats are looking for more intensity today. After the disappointing showing in Pullman Thursday Arizona actually didn’t practice on Friday instead getting to the arena early here today. An interesting approach.
HOOPS RECRUITS HERE — Word is the hoops recruits that will be here today are Josh Smith, Tony Wroten and Abdul Gaddy. So look for them behind the UW bench.
KELLEY ON ANDREW MORITZ — Times columnist Steve Kelley wrote a touching piece today on former UW walk-on Andrew Moritz and his battle with cancer. Read it here.
OFFICIALS FOR TODAY — The head official today is Dick Cartmell, one of the more respected refs in the country and a Richland native who was a guard for a state title team in 1972. The other two are Jim Giron and Deron White. Cartmell hasn’t done a UW game since the Morgan State game on Dec. 30.
And a programming note — I’m going to open up a live chat in a few minutes that we can keep going through the game if there is interest.
