My Top 25

Just two more polls before the Big Dance begins.
And yet again, a change at the top, though kind of back to the beginning as North Carolina — the pre-season No. 1 — is back atop my poll, and I would assume back atop everyone else’s, as well, for the first time since Dec. 29.
Carolina has won 13 of its last 14, losing only that OT game at Maryland a few weeks ago, beating Duke twice in that span as well as Clemson and Florida State, among others.
This was another week when there were a lot of losses, so simply losing one game didn’t merit a drop for a lot of teams. One team that didn’t lose and will likely move up a few spots is Washington, up to the highest ranking in my poll at year at No. 11.
I know Kansas lost this week, but the Jayhawks still have a better overall record than UW, beat the Huskies in November, and just won the regular season title of the Big 12, ranked fourth in the RPI this week to the Pac-10’s fifth.
UCLA and Gonzaga were also among the few teams to win multiple games this week without a loss, so each moved up a few spots, as well.
I continued my search for a mid-major or two for the bottom of the rankings with so much carnage elsewhere, but there just aren’t a lot of obvious choices out there this year — Davidson, which I had ranked in my pre-season poll, just lost in its conference tourney and may not make the NCAA Tournament this season. On paper, anyway, this doesn’t seem like a year when there will be as many mid-major upsets in the NCAA Tournament (which probably means there will be more than ever, but right now, just hard to make a case for it).
Here are my complete rankings this week:
1, North Carolina
2, Pitt
3, Connecticut
4, Memphis
5, Louisville
6, Oklahoma
7, Michigan State
8, Duke
9, Wake Forest
10, Kansas
11, Washington
12, Villanova
13, Missouri
14, LSU
15, UCLA
16, Gonzaga
17, Xavier
18, BYU
19, Butler
20, Syracuse
21, Illinois
22, Clemson
23, Marquette
24, Florida State
25, Arizona State
