Links compiled while watching another UW victim this season — Cleveland State — sew up an NCAA Tourney berth:
— Here’s my Pac-10 Tournament preview that will run in tomorrow’s paper. One that came up during editing was whether the fact that only three of seven regular season champs have won the tournament title means that history is against UW. One of my editors argued that it’s also three of the last five, indicating that No. 1 seeds have fared better of late. I pointed out those were three of the most dominant teams in recent conference history — the 2004 Stanford team that was rated No. 1 for while, and two UCLA teams that advanced to the Final Four. In other words, it’s not easy to do both.
— Anyway, you’ll see in my Pac-10 tourney preview box that I predict UCLA to win it. I know that won’t be a popular choice except for those of you who believe in my “reverse karma” — though I’ll point out that I not only picked UW’s last four games right, I also came pretty darn close to the score on three of them. I just think being in L.A., and that UCLA may have some added motivation to win it (which has often seemed like determining factor in this tournament, which team really wants to win it) gives the Bruins a slight edge.
— Times columnist Jerry Brewer has this examination of Washington’s backcourt.
— One thing I didn’t mention in my preview but thought about is that there is speculation this could be it for Oregon coach Ernie Kent, barring a miracle. Oregonian columnist John Canzano writes in his piece for Wednesday’s paper that the Ducks should finally cut Kent loose.
— Also in the Oregonian is this look at Oregon State, the team the Huskies could play in the first round.
Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News has his picks for the early games in the tournament and says there’s no clear-cut favorite while also making the good point that UW’s depth could help it in a tournament format.
— Here’s the Arizona Republic’s preview of the tournament using Romar’s quote that he wouldn’t be surprised if anyone won it, including Oregon.
All for now.
