Wrapping up the night at Staples

The best thing about tonight is that it’s over after two games that didn’t elicit a whole lot of excitement except for fans of the two winning teams.
Officially, there were 10,964 in attendance. Unofficially, there were about half that — and I wish the guys who tabulated that also handled my paychecks (to be fair, that’s paid attendance and not people in seats).
Should be a lot more people tomorrow for what should be a much better day of basketball, kicking off with the Arizona-Arizona State game at noon, followed by UW-Stanford at 2:30, Cal-USC at 6 and WSU-UCLA at 8:30.
My early picks are Arizona (third time’s got to be a charm in that one), UW, USC and UCLA.
A FEW OTHER NOTES AND LINKS. …
— The Huskies practiced down here today then returned to their hotel, with coach Lorenzo Romar and assistant Paul Fortier taking in a little of the Stanford game, and half of the WSU game before leaving.
— My story for tomorrow is already on-line, a little look at Quincy Pondexter’s turnaroundand how it got its start in this same city a few years ago.
— Times columnist Jerry Brewer writes that the Huskies have a lot to play for in this tournament.
— As noted in our prep blog, Romar caught the Franklin-Shadle Park game at the state tourney today before heading to LA.
All for now.
