Floyd out at USC?

The Mississippi Clarion-Ledger is reporting that Tim Floyd has resigned as head basketball coach at USC.
So far, that’s the only report on this I can find (though before I could post this, ESPN published this rewrite of the Clarion-Ledger story).
UPDATE — USC has now confirmed the news with its own press release noting that the university is “cooperating fully” in the NCAA investigation of the O.J. Mayo mess.
This will obviously have some major ramifications on the rest of the Pac-10.
The Trojans had become increasingly embroiled in NCAA and off-court issues, many relating to Mayo’s one-year tenure as a Trojan. Scott Wolf of the LA Daily News did a nice job a few days ago of putting into perspective the turmoil at USC. The LA Times also had this overview last week of the troubles at USC under Floyd.
And it’s possible that Floyd’s resignation is the precursor to some sort of resolution to the NCAA investigation.
Floyd was 85-50 in four years at USC and led the Trojans to the NCAA Tournament each of the past three years, including the Sweet 16 in 2007. But he angered USC fans when he interviewed for the Arizona job shortly after the season, and then came all the news of the potential NCAA troubles that had recruits turning away en masse.
Coupled with the loss to early entry of guys like Daniel Hackett and DeMar DeRozan, a USC team that looked to have a bright future in March suddenly appeared headed to the bottom of the conference.
Floyd last week skipped one of the regular off-season USC coaches tour events and there were reports that he didn’t look too comfortable in the ones he did attend.
UPDATE NO. 2 — ESPN’s Andy Katz says in his report that “very few coaches” who are established will want to step into this one until they see what happens with the NCAA, which makes sense. He also wondered if maybe Floyd isn’t being served up to the NCAA as a “sacrificial lamb” by USC, also another pertinent, if obvious, thought.
