Update on Wroten

Just received a second confirmation this morning and basketball star Tony Wroten Jr. did in fact partially tear his right ACL and will need surgery. The Garfield High standout will miss his junior season.
A source close to Wroten said he has no regrets about playing football. According to the source, the lesson to be learned from Wroten’s mishap is that young athletes need time to recovery. Wroten plays basketball year round and attempted to add a football season to his busy schedule without taking time off this summer.
A reader asked how Wroten fared this season. Keep in mind he was injured midway in the fourth quarter of the season opener against Franklin, but according to coach Anthony Allen, Wroten caught seven passes for 70 yards, including a touchdown. He also had two interceptions and 7-8 tackles.
Allen said Wroten went out for football for fun, but if he committed to the sport he could have been the second best receiver in the state after Skyline’s Kassen Williams.
The source said Wroten has been in frequent contact with the school’s who were recruiting him, including UW coach Lorenzo Romar. The source said Wroten could make a full recovery and used Jamal Crawford, the former Rainier Beach star and Atlanta Hawk, as an example. Crawford suffered a similar injury during a July 2001 pickup game and made a full recovery. Crawford is also advising Wroten and his family.
