Texas Tech game thread

IT’S OVER — Tech wins 99-92. That’s it for the game thread. Check back later and I’ll have more.
SINGLETARY FOULS OUT — Pondexter made the Tech star pick up his fifth foul and he’s out of the game. Pondexter sank a layup and a free throw. Tech 95-92.
UW TURNOVER — Bryan-Amaning’s pass to Overton was picked off by Roberson who easily scored on a layup, giving Tech a four-point lead. Roberson also sank two free throws. Tech 95-89 with 24.6 left.
HERE WE GO AGAIN — Looks like another fantastic finish. UW trails 91-89 with 48.4 seconds left.
TECH LOSES TWO — Roberts and Cohadarevic fouled out. Bryan-Amaning gave UW a 88-87 lead.
GANT FOULS OUT — Bryan-Amaning checks in for Gant who has five fouls and is out of the game. Tech 85-82.
A FEW WORDS ON TURNER — He’s got a great shot, but he’s sank just 2 of 7 free throws this season.
OVERTIME — After looking at replays, officials deemed the shot left Singletary’s hands after the buzzer went off. We’re going to overtime. Some fans are still on the court and campus security is trying to regain control. Amazing scene. Really. I know I said earlier this building was dead, but it’s alive now. UW 80-80.
SINGLETARY GAME-WINNER? — Turner missed a pair of free throws before Singetary ran down and sank a three-pointer at the buzzer. Not sure if it’s good or not. The fans are on the floor, but the PA is telling them to get off the court. Amazing scene.
THIS IS GONNA BE CLOSE — You get the feeling this will come down to the last shot, right? I got to slow down on the thread and write the game story for the web. Tech 78-77 withh 2:49 left.
CHECK THAT — It’s double technicals on Thomas and Roberts. Not Knight. Thomas was fouled on the previous play by Roberts. Thomas sank 1 of 2 FTs. UW 76-74.
TECHNICAL — Looks like coach Pat Knight picked up a technical foul. UW 75-74.
THOMAS IS STRUGGLING — He’s 3-for-10 shooting and he looks as if he’s lost his drive to go inside for the tough points. Overton has picked up the slack. But he’s got four fouls and will probably sit for awhile. Pondexter is a beast inside. UW 73-72.
IF NOT FOR THE TURNOVERS … — This might not be a close game. Still 15 isn’t horrible. Pondexter his showing why he’s a big-time player. Tech had the momentum and the crowd was crazy when he drained a huge basket near the top of the key. Tech 72-71.
TURNER’S GOT THE GREEN LIGHT — He’s taken 10 shots, which is tied for the game lead and the most in his career. His 15 points is also a person best. Tech 66-64.
SCOTT SUGGS CHECKS IN — That’s nearly everybody in the game now. Gant sank a putback to tie the score. UW 60-60. First tie since 30-30 with seven minutes left in the first.
TURNER TO THE RESCUE — Looks like it’s his night. He’s 3 for 5 on treys and has 11 points. UW is storming back. Thomas hit 1 of 3 FTs. Tech 60-58.
GADDY PICKS UP FOURTH — The freshman is on the bench, replaced by Overton. UW was making a mini-run before Tech answered. Tech 56-50.
THAT’S 11 — UW has 11 turnovers, which is killing any chance it has to get back into this game. Overton made a bad pass and was benched by Romar. Pondexter also threw the ball out of bounds, but looks like he’ll stay in. Tech 52-45.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — There’s cause for concern for this game. The Huskies better find someone to defend Reese and do it quick. It’s understandable why he went unnoticed in the first half because averaged 1.9 points in seven previous games. But he’s hot now and he’s killed UW from downtown where he’s hit 3 of 5 treys. Turnovers are also hurting UW. Nine is too many for this group. Gaddy isn’t giving them much and he needs his minutes reduced. Same for Holiday. Romar likes to use a lot of players, but he might be better served to reduce the rotation to 8-9. Granted Pondexter, Breshers and Gant have two fouls. I suspect Overton will have a bigger impact in the second half.
HALFTIME STATS — Pondexter 10, Thomas 8, Turner 8, Bryan-Amaning 6. UW is .556 (15 of 27) from the field, .500 (2 of 4) on three-pointers and .692 (9 of 13) on free throws. UW has 9 turnovers, 2 blocks and 5 steals.
Tech – Reese 14, Singletary 10, Roberson 8, Cohardarevic 6, Okorie 4. TT is .548 from the field, .400 (4 of 10) on three-pointers, .706 (12 of 17) on free throws. TT has 5 turnovers, 5 blocks, 5 steals.
HALFTIME — Tech 50-41
GADDY COLLECTS INTENTIONAL FOUL — Gaddy was out of position and tried to stop a fastbreak layup. Instead he grabbed Roberson from behind. Roberson sank both free throws. Tech 50-41.
LATE-ARRIVING CROWD — Maybe it’s the weather – there’s SNOW in Texas – but the crowd has gotten a lot better. The lower bowl is nearly full. Not as many empty seats. And the student section is still crazy. It took them midway into the first half, but it’s finally a good crowd.
HOT-SHOOTING RAIDERS — The scouting report said this is a good three-pointer and they’re showing it. Tech is 4 of 9 from downtown. Tech 40-34.
MOMENTUM SHIFTING — This has been a game of mini-runs and Tech is on one right now. Roberts swatted Pondexter’s short jumper before Brad Reese drained a three-pointer that got the crowd into it. Tech 35-32.
UNEVEN GAME SO FAR — UW isn’t playing poorly. But it has six turnovers and it hasn’t had more than 12 in any game this season. Pondexter (10 points) and Thomas (8) have bounced back from lackluster games on Sunday in a big way. Turner (5) is also responding well to starting. UW 28-28.
PONDEXTER’S 2ND FOUL — Pondexter has two. Looks like he’ll be replaced by Breshers. UW 20-20.
BRESHERS REPLAY — Just saw the play in which Breshers got the technical. He shoved Cohardarevic, which is the reason why he got the foul.
GOT TV — Anyone away from a TV can find the game on ESPN, which has link to watch. Here it is:
GADDY IN — Abdul Gaddy checks in for Overton. Tech 13-9.
TECHNICAL — Here we go. Wish I had replay. From what I saw, Breshers got into it with a Tech player and was given a technical. The players are huddled on the sideline. Romar is motioning to stay calm. Lots of guys are patting Breshers on the back. Timeout. UW 9-9.
SUBS — Darnell Gant and Tyreese Breshers replaced Turner and Bryan-Amaning. UW 9-6.
WEAK CROWD — Not sure what it looks like on TV, but there’s no juice inside this building. The student section behind the basket is packed and rowdy, but the there’s still plenty of empty seats throughout the building.
YOU GOT A BETTER VIEW THAN I — They put the media folks way up in the balcony. Honestly, I’m about 100 yards away from the court with no TV or replays. So I apologize in advance for any mistakes.
G – John Roberson
G – Nick Okorie
C – Darko Cohaderevic
F – Mike Singetary
F – D’walyn Roberts
TURNER GETS THE NOD — Turner will make his first collegiate start.
YOUR RESULTS — We did a poll in today’s Live chat and the people have spoken. When asked: Who will be the fifth starter?
You said: Darnell Gant ( 40% ); Tyreese Breshers ( 20% ); Abdul Gaddy ( 15% ); Elston Turner ( 21% ); Justin Holiday ( 3% ); Somebody else ( 1% ).
WE’RE HERE — Spent the past 30 minutes walking around campus and touring the United Spirit Arena. It’s a big building with 15,098 capacity. Too big for Texas Tech. The place will only be half filled. And they close off the upper deck. I’m not expecting much of a hostile crowd if they close off the top. We’ll see.
