Cal State Northridge game thread

QUICK STATS — Thomas 21 points, Pondexter 20, Gaddy 10, Overton 7, Bryan-Amaning 6, Turner 6, Suggs 5, Trent 4, Holiday 4, Breshers 3 and Gant 1.
UW WINS — 88-76.
MASS EXODUS — Many fans are heading for the exits with 4:59 left. Same score.
POWER DUNK — Pondexter nearly took Lizzarraga into the rim when he flushed a two-handed dunk. UW 74-59.
FOUL FEST — We’ve got 46 fouls tonight. Cal State 28. UW leads 71-55. I’m going to slow down on the thread and write the game story.
18-2 RUN — UW regained controlled and leads 66-49.
PONDEXTER TO THE RESCUE — Pondexter stopped the bleeding with a big three-pointer. He also had a steal and assist to Bryan-Amaning, who flushed a dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. Suggs also knocked down a trey. UW 56-47.
BIG RUN — Cal State is riding a 11-0 run. Vinnie (the Microwave) McGhee drained a three-pointer and sank a running hook shot to cut UW’s lead to 48-47. The Huskies haven’t scored on eight possessions.
DOUBLE TECHNICAL — Pondexter and Hill picked up technical fouls for pushing and shoving. UW 48-36.
SECOND HALF STARTERS — Breshers replaced Bryan-Amaning.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — It’s been a somewhat erratic, but still effective half for UW. Gaddy is playing his best game of the season. He’s tied his personal best of 9 points. He has just one assist, but should have 3-4 if not for missed shots. Thomas is also playing his best game in quite some time. He’s sank 2 of 4 shots and burning the Matadors with dribble drives. Romar is getting production from nearly everyone in the rotation and the defense is much improved from Thursday when UW allowed 47.8 percent. Romar’s only complaint is probably UW’s nine turnovers.
HALFTIME STATS — UW: Thomas 13 points, Gaddy 9, Overton 6, Turner 6 and Pondexter 5. UW is shooting 45.5 percent (15 of 33) on FGs, 25 percent (1 of 4) on three-pointers and 75 percent (15 of 20) on free throws. UW has 25 rebounds, 5 assists and 9 turnovers.
Cal State: Daniel 10 points, Lizarraga 6, Menner 6. Cal State is shooting 39.4 percent (13 of 33) from the field, 16.7 percent (1 of 6) on treys and 58.3 percent (7 of 12) at the line. Cal State has 14 rebounds, 3 assists and 8 TOs.
HALFTIME — UW 46-34.
NO PONDEXTER, NO THOMAS — Coach Lorenzo Romar doesn’t do it a lot, but he’s playing a lineup that doesn’t include his top two scorers. Holiday stole a pass that ignited a fastbreak. Gaddy finished with a layup despite being fouled. He sank the free throw. UW 36-28.
CAL STATE GOES ZONE — It’s not their forte, but the Matadors switched to a 2-3 zone. Gaddy missed a three-pointer and Trent whiffed on layup. Turner is back in. It will be interesting to see Cal State stays in the zone. UW 33-27.
UW RUN — The Huskies are on a 11-5 run. UW 32-22.
11-MAN ROTATION — Scott Suggs is in. UW 22-19.
UW COLLISION — Diving for a loose ball, Thomas looks as if his tooth nicked Gaddy above the right eye. Gaddy left bleeding. He’s on the bench being tended to. UW 21-17.
AROUND THE PAC-10: UCLA (2-5) lost 73-61 to top-ranked Kansas. Oregon State (4-3) destroyed Cal State Bakersfield 74-39. And Arizona (3-4) lost 79-62 to Oklahoma.
GADDY’S BEST GAME? — The freshman looks like he’s rebounding from Thursday’s scoreless outing. He’s really playing well. UW 17-15.
IT’S TIED — Turner stole an alley-oop pass and raced the length of the court for a layup. UW 13-13. Gaddy is also playing well. He’s got four points on 2-for-2 shooting.
MORE SUBS — Tyreese Breshers is in for Bryan-Amaning and Abdul Gaddy replaced Overton. Cal St. 7-4.
MISSED FREE THROWS — As fate would have it, Turner was the first Husky at the line and he missed both. Cal St. 7-2.
TURNER’S BACK — He checked in for Thomas who has committed an early turnover and looks to be struggling. Cal St. 5-2.
FIRST SUB — Darnell Gant replaced Turner. Very early substitution. Looks like Turner didn’t defend properly on an play. UW 2-2.
STARTING LINEUPS — No change for UW: Quincy Pondexter, Isaiah Thomas, Venoy Overton, Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Turner.
For Cal State:
F Micahel Lizarrage
F Lenny Daniel
G Mark Hill
G Kenny Daniels
G Raymond Cody
WOODWARD’S PREDICTION — Spoke with Washington AD Scott Woodward before tonight’s game. Here’s his thoughts on the game: “I think the kids will respond from a lackluster performance from Lubbock. If they play their game they should be fine.”
BROADCAST NEWS — The game is on FSN. Tom Glasgow and Francis Williams are the announcers. Bob Rondeau and Jason Hamilton are calling the game on the radio.
A FEW WORDS ON TURNER — Let’s start the thread with a few a comment on a story I wrote today on Elston Turner. In the piece, Turner said he hasn’t been practicing free throws when asked about his two missed free throws late in Thursday’s loss at Texas Tech. To clarify, UW practices free throws daily and everyone participates in the drill. Turner meant he hadn’t been doing the extra work on free throws that he’d done in the past.
