Around the Pac-10:
— Just when you thought it was safe to believe in Oregon State, the Beavers lost 63-61 in the final seconds at Illinois-Chicago. The Flames (2-6) had a six-game losing streak and OSU fell to 4-5. The Beavers have just two non-conference games remaining before starting Pac-10 play at Washington on Dec. 31.
[Sidenote: It doesn’t make sense for Oregon State to play a game at Illinois-Chicago. Coach Craig Robinson, a Chi-town native, no doubt wanted to help old buddies with a game. He was also probably hoping for a grand homecoming. Plus, Chicago has become a recruiting spot for the Beavers. But anytime you play an out-of-conference road game against an inferior opponent, you run the risk of being embarrassed. And this loss will follow OSU all season.]
— At least one Oregon school knows how to handle a one-win opponent that’s riding a six-game losing streak. The Ducks rolled to a 79-51 victory over Mississippi Valley State at McArthur Court.
— And finally, Stanford trailed by double digits for most of the second half, but the Cardinal made a late comeback attempt before falling 71-70 to Oklahoma State. Stanford had a chance to win the game on its final possession, but Andrew Zimmerman’s missed an awkward layup with seconds remaining.
Landry Fields had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Cardinal (5-4), which lost for the second time in six home games. Jeremy Green added 19 points and Zimmerman had 14.
No Pac-10 games tonight.
