IT’S OVER — UW 73-64.
HOLMES WON’T QUIT — The Texas sharp-shooter has drained 5 of 8 three-point attempts. His latest trey cut UW’s lead to 73-64 with 47.9 seconds left.
CROWD IS LEAVING — A few fans are making their way to the exits. UW 73-61.
OVERTON AT THE LINE — Overton sank 5 of 6 free throws to put UW up 71-61
IT’S DOWN TO FIVE — Holmes sank a three-pointer to draw A&M close. UW 66-61.
SUGGS HITS A DAGGER — Suggs hasn’t done much on the offensive end until he drained a three-pointer that put a charge into the crowd. Before Suggs’ trey, Overton tracked down an offensive rebound. 2:34 left. UW 65-55.
PONDEXTER LEADS THE WAY — He’s just getting it done on both ends. He has 24 points and 11 rebounds. The Aggies are pressing. Time is running down and they’re forcing everything. It’s interesting to note who Romar has in the game. Wtih 3:48 left, UW is going with Pondexter, Thomas, Overton, Gant and Suggs. UW 60-49.
ROLAND UPDATE — A UW official said Roland is stable and being taken to Harborview Medical Center. UW 49-39.
SLOWING DOWN — Got to slow down on the thread and write the game story.
WOW — Thomas, 5-8, blocked a layupe from 6-9 Davis beneath the basket. UW 36-35.
GADDY’S FOURTH FOUL — Gaddy went to the bench after collecting his fourth foul. He’s replaced by Overton. UW 36-35.
GREAT SCENE — The crowd applauded as Roland was wheeled away on a stretcher. The Aggies players surrounded him before he left and huddled around him. He was done for 8 minutes. We’ve got 17:30 left in the game. UW 34-33.
STILL DOWN — We think it’s a broken right leg or ankle. It happened in front of the A&M bench. Everybody in the crowd turned away. Roland is still down and being treated. I think they’re going to carry him out on a board. A few Aggies are crying on the bench. It’s a surreal scene. Roland is conscious and he’s talking to A&M staffers.
ROLAND DOWN — Roland is laying the court and being treated by the Aggie’s medical staff. Not sure yet what’s happened. But it appears serious. Teh Aggies are huddled and Sloan, his best friend, is shaken.
SECOND HALF — Same starters.
FIRST SELLOUT — The announced crowd tonight is 10,000.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — It’s Pondexter and nothing else for UW. He continues to prove just how good he is. This is another one of those games when Pondexter has taken over because there’s few other good scoring options. The Huskies have rotated several players on Sloan, but he’s still getting the basket. Turnovers are hurting Washington and Thomas doesn’t have a good idea as to how he wants to attack the Aggies defense. He’s scoreless on 0-for-6 shooting. Despite all that’s gone wrong, UW is only two points down. It’s anybody’s game.
HALFTIME STATS — UW: Pondexter 16 points, Gant 5, Overton 3 and Breshers 3. UW is shooting 28.1 percent (9 of 32) from the field, 70.6 percent (12 of 17) on free throws and 0 percent (0 for 7) on three-pointers. UW has 3 assists, 4 steals and 7 turnovers.
A&M: Sloan 10 points, Roland 4, Walkup 4 and Middleton 4. A&M is 37 percent (10 of 27) from the field, 64.3 percent (9 of 14) from the ine and 37.5 percent (3 of 8) on treys. A&M has 5 assists, 4 steals and 9 turnovers.
HALFTIME — A&M 32-30.
CLOSING IN — Washington has picked up the intensity on the defensive end. The lineup of Pondexter, Thomas, Holiday, Suggs and Breshers seems to be working. A&M hasn’t scored in four straight possessions. A&M 28-26.
TV TIMEOUT — The score was tied at 22-22 before A&M scored six unanswered points. Thomas is still scoreless and he’s having a hard time getting anything going. In fact, other and Pondexter no Huskies player has been able to generate any consistent offense. Breshers looked as if he had a matchup advantage, but UW has gone away from him. A&M 28-23.
WOW — Pondexter made highlight play when he dunked on Harris despite being fouled. Pondexter crashed to the court, but sank the free throw. UW 20-19.
TV TIMEOUT — Anyone expecting a high-scoring game needs to guess again. The shooting is pretty bad. UW is .313 from the field and A&M is .300. UW has 5 turnovers, A&M 6. A&M 19-17.
AGGIES ZONE — Texas A&M switched to a 2-3 zone that’s slowed UW’s offense. A&M also appears to have found seams in Washington’s defense. During a 10-2 run, the Aggies connected on two layups and two open jumpers. A&M 19-16.
OFFICIALS’ REVIEW — The refs are looking at a long shot from Khris Middelton to determine whether it’s a 2 or a 3. Personally, I hate this rule. The officials stopped the game and killed the flow of the game. UW wasn’t on a fastbreak or anything, but the game has a quick tempo and the 2-3 minutes it took to look at the replays ruined that tempo. UW 14-11.
FINAL SCORE — Cal lost to Kansas 84-69. Wazzu and Oregon still lead in the second half.
TV TIMEOUT — Thomas not only hasn’t scored, he hasn’t taken a shot, which is a little surprising. This could be a breakout game for Breshers and Trent. They’re both very active and they’re difficult to defend once they get going. Overton has two turnovers and he’s hurting UW just as much as he’s helping it right now.
IT’S GETTING HEATED — This feels like a February game. The crowd is into it and it’s getting a little chippy on the court. UW 13-9.
FOURTH SUB — Wow. Clarence Trent is in for Breshers. That’s 10 Huskies. I’m guessing Trent is in because Bryan-Amaning has two fouls. UW 11-8.
FIRST TIMEOUT — Pondexter is getting his mid-range shot. He’s 2 for 4. Bryan-Amaning has played great defense and has denied Davis good looks in the middle. Sloan is going to difficult to defend, but so far he looks like the Aggies only scoring threat. Good start for the Huskies. UW 6-5.
THIRD SUB — Justin Holiday replaced Gant.
SECOND SUBS — Venoy Overton and Scott Suggs are in for Thomas and Gaddy. UW 6-3.
FIRST SUB — Tyreese Breshers replaces Bryan-Amaning, who picked up his second foul. He also has two steals. UW 6-2.
BEST CROWD OF THE SEASON — It just might be the first sellout. Hard to tell. But easily, this is the most fans for a UW game this season.
UW STRIKES FIRST — Gant drained a mid-range baseline jumper and Bryan-Amaning nearly created an Aggies turnover. UW 2-0.
STARTING LINEUPS — No change for UW: Isaiah Thomas, Abdul Gaddy, Quincy Pondexter, Darnell Gant and Matthew Bryan-Amaning.
F Bryan Davis
F Nathan Walkup
G Derrick Roland
G Donald Sloan
G Dash Harris
WARNING — Because of the late start and tight deadlines, I may not post as much as I normally would. Thank goodness, it’s the only 8 p.m. start this season.
OFFICIALS — It’s a mixed three-man crew tonight. Two refs are from the Pac-10 and I believe the third is from the Big 12.
TV INFO — FSN has the game and it will be broadcast nationally. As such, the announcers are Barry Tompkins and Marques Johnson.
AROUND THE PAC-10 — Stanford lost at Texas Tech 100-87, which helps UW. USC came from behind in the second half and defeated Western Michigan 55-51, which also helps UW. Washington State and Oregon have early leads and Cal is hanging tight with Kansas with less than nine minutes left.
IT’S OVER — UW 73-64.
