Oregon State game thread

HAPPY NEWS YEAR — No post-game analysis tonight folks. I’ll post it tomorrow. Be safe and see you next year.
IT’S OVER — UW 76-70.
FOUR-POINT PLAY — Johnson sank a three-pointer when Bryan-Amaning fouled Schaftenaar. The refs have been calling continuation plays all night so they did the same thing here. Schaftenaar sank one of two. UW 69-62 with 3:22 left.
SLOWING DOWN — Got to slow down on the thread to write the game story. UW 62-52 with 7:45 left.
UW IN THE BONUS — Weird game for the refs. Now UW is in the bonus. Fouls are 8-7 UW. UW 62-52.
BONUS TIME — Oregon State is in the bonus. Fouls are 8-2. UW 54-47.
ALLEY-OOP — OSU left the back door open and Pondexter rushed in for an alley-oop dunk from Overton. On the other end, Bryan-Amaning blocked Schaftenaar in the low post. UW 53-46.
MOHAWK MANIA — Bryan-Amaning and Holiday are sporting the do made famous by Mr. T. UW 51-46.
OSU RUN — The Beavers are on an 8-2 run and Romar isn’t happy. UW had control of the game and now, OSU has seized some of the momentum. Seth Tarver is really good. He has four points during this run. UW 49-44.
SECOND HALF — Both teams began the half with the same starters. Bryan-Amaning picked up his second foul and was replaced by Breshers. UW 43-35.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — UW is showing why it’s so good at home. The Huskies feed off of their crowd as they did late in the second half when Overton appeared to force a turnover and the refs failed to call an obvious travel violation. After the non-call, the energy inside this building kicked up a few notches. Still OSU’s defense has given the Huskies problems at times. UW’s defense is doing the same. Overton has four steals, Tarver three. Thomas is showing no ill effects from the sprained right ankle. He has three three-pointers.
HALFTIME STATS — UW: Thomas 13 points, Overton 11, Bryan-Amaning 8 and Pondexter 7. FG (48.4), 3-FG (44.4), FT (75.0), 18 rebounds, 7 assists, 9 steals, 9 TOs.
OSU: Schaftenaar, Haynes, Wallace and Burton each have six points. FG (53.8), 3-FG (40.0), FT (100.), 8 rebounds, 9 assists, 5 steals and 12 TOs.
HALFTIME — UW 43-33.
NON-CALL SPRARKS RUN — Everybody is in it now. UW’s defense is up extra hyper and it’s allowing the Huskies to score easy baskets. Overton drained a three-pointer. UW 36-29.
PAC-10 REFS — Wow. The refs just blew an obvious traveling call on Haynes. Overton appeared to force him into a turnover. Both players dove for a loose ball. Hayes got it first and got up without a travel call. The fans are into it. UW 33-27.
THE PERPLEXING CASE OF BRYAN-AMAING — He swatted a shot one attempt and collected a steal on the next. He’s playing amazing defense and doesn’t have a rebound. Wow. UW 33-27.
MISSING SUGGS — Didn’t think I’d write this when the season started, but UW is really missing Suggs. Twice the ball has rotated to the corner for an open three-pointer and twice the Huskies have missed badly. Suggs usually takes that shot and he’s UW’s best three-point shooter. UW 29-27.
OVERTON AGAIN — Overton and Seth Tarver are showing why they’re two of the best defenders in the conference. Overton has two steals and he’s forced two other turnovers. He just ripped Omari Johnson in the open court and was fouled while driving for a layup. UW 27-23.
FUN MATCHUP — Breshers vs. Joe Burton is a good matchup. Burton is 6-7 and 295 pounds. Breshers is 6-7 and 255.
MOMENTUM TURNING — The Huskies are slowing taking control of the game. It looks as if they’re getting adjusted to OSU’s zone and it looks as if the Beavers are getting a little tired. They’re not extending the defense quite as much and they’re not getting to the passes like they were in the opening minutes. Appears the adrenaline has worn off. Both teams look as if they’re settling into the game. Now it’s about who executes for the final 8 minutes. UW 23-21.
WHAT ANKLE? — Thomas who sprained his right ankle last Sunday converted a nifty up and under layup and on the next UW possession drained a three-pointer to give UW its first lead. UW 23-21.
NO SCOTT SUGGS — He was sick before the game, vomiting and just not feeling well. A UW spokesman said he won’t play because of food poisoning.
OSU RUN — To cap, the Beavers ran off 9 unanswered points. UW countered with a 7-0 run. Breshers is starting to take over in the middle. He’s missed a couple of layups. It will be interesting to see if the Beavers can sustain this pace because their bench isn’t as deep as UW’s. OSU 21-17.
TURNOVERS — OSU converted two UW turnovers into baskets. The 1-3-1 zone is causing UW fits. Gaddy has been pulled for Thomas. OSU 17-10.
SECOND SUBS — Tyreese Breshers and Justin Holiday subbed Bryan-Amaning and Gant. Gaddy is the only starter in for UW. OSU 13-10.
FIRST SUBS — Venoy Overton and Elston Turner are in for Thomas and Pondexter.
SHAKY START — OSU’s defense made UW a little hesitant early on. Still, Gaddy made a nice dribble drive and connected with Bryan-Amaning for a dunk. And Gant just made a long jumper. UW 10-10
FINDING HOLES — Bryan-Amaning has six points and he’s finding seams in OSU’s 1-3-1 zone. OSU 10-8.
GOOD CROWD — We’re seconds from tip-off and the building is nearly full. Looks like a sellout tonight.
STARTING LINEUPS — No change for UW: Isaiah Thomas, Abdul Gaddy, Quincy Pondexter, Darnell Gant and Matthew Bryan-Amaning.
Oregon State
F – Daniel Deane
F – Seth Tarver
C – Roeland Schaftenaar
G – Josh Tarver
G – Calvin Haynes
PRE-GAME — The game ops crew is playing the Survivor theme. Good idea.
LIVE AUDIO — Check OSU website at www.osubeavers.com.
ON TV — FSN has the game. Tom Glasglow and Francis Williams are calling the action and Jen Mueller is providing sideline reports.
FINAL FROM PULLMAN — Oregon 91-89 2OT. Amazing game. Check the highlights. Methinks the Cougars got robbed by the refs who called a technical for celebration with 0.3 seconds left. It reminded me of the Jake Locker play when he was penalized for excessive celebration.
AROUND THE PAC-10: UCLA hung on to beat Arizona State 72-20; USC downed Arizona 56-50 and at last check the Washington State and Oregon game was in double overtime.
