Pac-10 Power Rankings: History says UW can bounce back

(Editor’s note: The Pac-10 Power Rankings is a snap shot and a look at which teams are playing the best right now. It’s not a prediction of the conference race. It’s more of a handicapping tool.)
1. (Last week: 2) California (Record: 10-5, 2-1 Pac-10; RPI rank: 37)
Recent results:
Beat USC 67-59; Lost 76-75 (ot) to UCLA.
Somebody had to be No. 1, which is a little like the kiss of death these days. … The Bears are one point from a five-game winning streak. … Jorge Gutierrez (right knee) won’t play this week, but coach Mike Montgomery expects he’ll return next week. … Cal is the only team projected by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi that will advance to the NCAA tournament.
Up next: Thursday at Washington State; Saturday at Washington.
2. (9) Arizona State (12-5, 2-2; 99)
Recent results:
Beat WSU 71-46; Beat UW 68-51
Can we give the Coach of the Year award to Herb Sendek right now? He’s done the most with the least. … Be honest. If you were drafting in a Pac-10 Fantasy League, would you take anybody from ASU? … The Sun Devils held WSU (46 points), USC (47) and UW (51) to season lows in scoring.
Up next: Thur. at Oregon; Sat. at Oregon State.
3. (6) Washington State (12-4, 2-2; 86)
Recent results:
Lost 71-46 at ASU; Won 68-51 at Arizona.
Klay Thompson, who leads the Pac-10 with 23 points per game, has an aversion to zones. Against OSU, he scored 7 points and 9 vs. ASU. Fortunately for WSU, Thursday’s opponent Cal doesn’t play zone. … Former Rainier Beach High standout Reggie Moore scored a career-high 20 points last week at Arizona.
Up next: Thur. vs. Cal; Sat. vs. Stanford

4. (7) Stanford (8-7, 2-1; 133)
Recent results:
Beat UCLA 70-59; Beat USC 76-75 (ot)
In many ways, the Cardinal is similar to UW. Stanford is led by high-scoring small forward Landry Fields (22.1 ppg.) and wing Jeremy Green (17.6). Coach Johnny Dawkins is trying to find a consistent third scorer and eke out more production from an underachieving front line.
Up next: Thur. at UW; Sat. at WSU.
5. (1) Oregon (10-5, 2-1; 123)
Recent results:
Lost 64-57 to OSU.
All of the momentum gained from a pair of opening week road wins was lost during a home defeat to cross-state rival Oregon State. The only positives from the loss, the Ducks got a good look at a zone defense and they’ll see another this week when ASU comes to town. … C Michael Dunigan 20 points and 14 rebounds) and G Malcolm Armstead (21 points and 6 assists) destroyed UW, but came up short against OSU. Dunigan finished with 8 points and Armstead had 9 points and 6 turnovers.
Up next: Thur. vs. ASU; Sat. vs. Ariz.
6. (8) Arizona (8-8, 2-2; 85)
Recent results:
Beat UW 87-70; Lost 78-76 to WSU.
Don’t say goodbye to the 25-year NCAA tournament streak just yet. The Wildcats are a young team that’s only going to get better. Jamelle Horne looked like a NBA prospect vs. UW and freshman Derrick Williams is one of the best big men in the Pac-10. … Arizona is eight points from being 4-0. This is my sleeper pick to win the conference.
Up next: Thur. at OSU; Sat. at Ore.
7. (5) UCLA (7-9, 2-2; 198)
Recent results:
Lost at Stan. 70-59; Won 76-75 (ot) at Cal.

Up next: Sat. vs. USC.
8. (10) Oregon State (7-8, 1-2; 214)

Alex Stephenson, a 6-9, 235-pound forward, is drawing raves from Pac-10 coaches. Said Howland: “It’s amazing how just massive and strong he is. He manhandles people in the post with just how strong he is.” Stephenson is third in rebounding (8.3 per game) and second in blocked shots (1.6). … Fordham freshman transfer Jio Fontan will be eligible Jan. 2011.

Recent results:
Lost at Arizona 87-70, Lost at ASU 68-51.
History says a three-game losing streak isn’t a death sentence. UW has been to the Sweet 16 four times since 1984 and in two of those years (1998 and 2006) the Huskies lost three straight conference games. … UW is the only school in the conference with a sellout this season.
