USC game thread

GAME OVER — USC 87-61.
TRENT IS IN — Freshman Clarence Trent is bring a whole of energy off the bench and UW is making the score look a little more respectable. USC 81-61.
JOHNSON MAKES THE HIGHLIGHTS — Johnson is a monster. He flushed on a fastbreak that brought the house down. I’m going to slow down on the thread. Even though theres 5:46 left, the outcome doesn’t appear to be in doubt. USC 73-50.
TOUGH SPOT — Not sure if it’s possible to overcome a 21-point deficit in 6:35, but that’s UW’s task. At the very least, the Huskies need to create some positive momentum heading into Tuesday’s game against Seattle University. USC 69-48.
NOT GOOD — Back-to-back three-pointers has given USC a 65-46 lead with 8:15 left. The Huskies aren’t animated or anything. They looked stunned. Thomas is back in the game after a long time on the bench. This could get real ugly, real quick.
UH-OH — Overton collected his fourth foul. Without him, the Huskies have no chance of a comeback. USC 62-46.
OVERTON’S BIG DAY — In case you’re wondering, Overton’s career high is 19. He has 16, which is a season high. USC 59-44.
MORE ZONE — UW goes zone again and it’s not working. USC is hitting some big shots from the outside with the clock winding down. The Husky guards just aren’t extending the defense far enough. USC 59-42.
TV TIMEOUT — Not much has changed from the first half. The Trojans are working the ball inside when they get a chance. And if that’s not there, they wait until it’s available. UW has turned to Holiday for its offense. I think Thomas is tired after three straight games when he had to defend the opponent’s top guard. USC 51-36.
SECOND HALF — No change in the starters.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — Where would the Huskies be without Overton, who has a team-high 12 points. No other UW player as more than four. Overton is simply putting his head down, driving hard to the rim and dropping layups over USC’s tall front line. He’s been UW’s most effective offensive weapon.
Defensively, the Huskies may have found something with the zone. No doubt USC is working on an answer during halftime, but the zone was giving the Trojans fits during the final minutes of the first half. And the zone negated USC’s big men, who were killing the Huskies inside. The Trojans lost Thursday after leading 15 in the second half on Thursday against WSU. It could happen again.
It will be interesting to see which lineup Romar starts the second half. Overton should be out there. Same with Bryan-Amaning.

UW GOES ZONE — I think this is the second time I’ve seen the Huskies play zone this season. On the two possessions, they nearly forced clock violations. Gerrity is beating the zone by himself. He sank a three-pointer with time winding down and a running short jumper. USC 40-28.
WHERE’S PONDEXTER — That’s a rhetorical question. He’s on the court, but he’s having a difficult time getting a good look against the Trojans defense. USC is sending one of its big men to help out and Pondexter is passing out of the double team. He’s 1-for-4 shooting with two points.
PRESS NO LONGER WORKING — Gerrity is doing a fine job breaking UW’s pressure in the backcourt. In fact, he’s blown past Overton several times and set up the Trojans big men for highlight finishes at the rim. USC 36-24.
DEFENSIVE STRATEGY — It rarely happens in the college game, but Stepheson looks like he demands a double team if he’s going to be stopped. Not sure if UW can keep defending him with just one guy. He’s just too strong. USC 28-19.
POOR TRANSITIONS — UW has been burned three times because they didn’t get back on defense. USC 26-17.
NO PONDEXTER, NO THOMAS — No problem. At least for now. The unusual lineup of Suggs, Overton, Gaddy, Gant and MBA has cut UW’s deficit. Overton is pushing the tempo and Suggs just drained a trey. USC 22-15.
BIG BOY BASKETBALL — The Trojans are playing big boy basketball and it’s trumping UW’s smaller lineup. Whether it’s Stepheson or Leonard Washington, the Trojans are powering to the rim and UW has no answer. USC 22-10.
ARIZONA ALL OVER AGAIN — We’ve seen this game before. We saw it two weeks ago in Tucson, Az. The Huskies have no energy. And they’re being run out of the gym. USC 19-6.
SUBS — Venoy Overton is in for Gaddy and Scott Suggs checked in for Holiday. The Trojans have hurt UW in the middle early on. Johnson converted an acrobatic alley-oop layup and Stepheson powered in a thunder dunk. Meanwhile, Bryan-Amaning drew a three-second violation. USC 14-6.
UW TRAPPING — The Huskies are using Holiday to trap Gerrity in the backcourt. The ploy seems to be working. USC 8-6.
FIRST SUBS — Matthew Bryan-Amaning replaced Breshers. Gaddy looks good. He’s being aggressive with the dribble and looking for his shot. USC 6-4.
DEFENSIVE ASSIGNMENTS — Thomas is on Gerrity, Gaddy has Johnson. USC 4-2.
CLOCK MALFUNCTION — Just what UW fans want to hear after Thursday’s game. The refs have stopped the game because the clock is not functioning properly. Not sure what the specific problem is, but it looks to okay now.
STARTERS — No change for UW: Tyreese Breshers, Justin Holiday, Quincy Pondexter, Abdul Gaddy and Isaiah Thomas.
USC: F Nikola Vucevic, F Marcus Johnson, C Stepheson, G Mike Gerrity and G Dwight Lewis.
TV ONLINE — A poster suggest trying Justin.TV. I haven’t tried it yet.
ON TV — FSN has the call. It’s a three-man crew tonight with Paul Sunderland handling play-by-play duties and analysts Francis Williams and Brandon Granville.
MYSTERY SOLVED — The game announcer is Petros Papadakis, the former USC football player who is a college football analyst for FSN. Thanks BC.
WHAT A WASTE — The Galen Center is a beautiful arena. Probably the best in the Pac-10, complete with a skyline view of downtown L.A. Too bad the Trojans draw a league low attendance. I’d guess there’s 2,500 fans here right now.
WOW — USC F Alex Stepheson came out for early warmups wearing a tight, sleeveless shirt and shorts and he looked impressive. The guy is ripped. Straight out of Central Casting. Said one courtside observer: “He did that on purpose. Would Lou Ferrigno come out in full warmups?”
THE SPIRIT OF TROY — I was thinking of counting how many times the USC band will play the school’s fight song. I’m putting the over/under at 30.
IS THAT SOFTY? — The USC game announcer could be the twin brother of KJR’s Dave “Softy” Mahler.
SAY HELLO TO PETE — When I got to my seat, a USC fan noticed my press credential and said “Say hello to Pete for me.” Several other fans chimed in on the ex-Trojans coach who took the Seahawks job. They still love Pete Carroll around here.
NOW FOR THE MAIN COURSE — Traffic wasn’t bad on 405 or 10. Made it to the Galen Center with time to spare. Thanks to everyone who checked in for the WSU-UCLA thread. That was my first time watching the Cougars in person and I was able to get a pretty good feel for them. The UW-WSU should be a good one because the teams are very similar.
