Pac-10 Power Rankings: Bears are Golden again

1. (Last week: 2) California (Record: 13-6, 5-2 Pac-10; RPI rank: 26)
Recent results:
Beat Oregon State 65-61; beat Oregon 89-57.
Cal is back on top of the rankings and that’s not a great thing. No team has stayed here longer than a week. … Tonight begins the toughest stretch of the season for the Golden Bears, which plays the next two weeks on the road. They begin in Arizona this week and travel to Los Angeles next week for games at USC and UCLA. If Cal goes 3-1 in this stretch, it might sew up the Pac-10 title race.
Up next: Thursday at Arizona State; Saturday at Arizona.
2. (1) Arizona State (14-6, 4-3; 81)
Recent results:
Lost 77-58 to Ariz.
Five teams are log jammed at No. 2 in the Pac-10 with three losses. It’s difficult to overlook last week’s home defeat to an in-state rival, but it was ASU’s first bad game in two weeks. … Not sure if the Sun Devils will win too many games without junior G Jamelle McMillan, who has missed the past two games because of plantar fasciitis. With McMillan, ASU shoots 45.6 percent from the field and opponents are 39.1 percent. Without McMillan, ASU is shooting .368 percent, opponents .488.

3. (7) USC (12-7, 4-3; 63)
Recent results:
Beat UW 87-61; Lost to WSU 67-60.
Thumping the Huskies, doesn’t make them world beaters. Keep in mind, this is the same team that lost at Stanford and blew a 15-point second half lead at home to WSU. Still the Trojans have the best front line in the conference and they have a defense that travels. On the road, opponents average 63.0 points, which is the fewest in the Pac-10. USC has allowed opponents 37.3 percent shooting from the field, the lowest mark in the conference since Stanford in 1999-2000.

4. (4) Arizona (10-9, 4-3; 60)
Recent results:
Won 77-58 at ASU.
Saturday’s win at ASU shouldn’t surprise anyone. After dropping its first three road games, the Wildcats have won three of their last four games away from McKale Center. In seven true road games, UA has outscored opponents 450-446.

5. (5) Washington State (14-6, 4-4; 97)
Recent results:
Lost at UCLA 74-62; Won 67-60 at USC.
Looks like a third scoring option is emerging. Over the last four games, senior G Nikola Koprivica is averaging 12.3 points and 6.8 rebounds. … Freshman G Reggie Moore has scored 20 or more points in four of the last six games.

6. (10) UCLA (9-10, 4-4; 133)
Recent results:
Beat WSU 74-62; Beat UW 62-61.
The Bruins made the biggest in the rankings. … Coach Ben Howland switched to a zone, which shut down Washington and Washington State, but it remains to see if the UCLA has truly turned the corner. Tough times are ahead. Seven of the Bruins final 11 games are on the road where they’re 1-6 overall.

7. (3) Washington (12-7, 3-5; 75)
Recent results:
Beat Seattle University 123-76; lost at USC 87-61; lost at UCLA 62-61
G Isaiah Thomas (stomach illness), who missed Tuesday’s game, is expected to return to practice this week and play Saturday. … The Huskies average 86.9 points at home, but just 66.8 in road games. UW opponents average 68.7 points at Hec Ed and 80.6 at home.

8. (8) Stanford (10-9, 4-3; 120)
Recent results:
Beat Ore. 84-69; Beat OSU 59-35.
Like Washington, the Cardinal is winless in true road games and it’s 1-7 in games away from Maples Pavilion. … Jeremy Green (19.9 ppg.) and Landry Fields (19.1) are No. 1 and 2 respectively in the Pac-10 in scoring for conference games.

9. (6) Oregon State (8-11, 2-5; 202)
Recent results:
Lost 65-61 at Cal; Lost 59-35 at Stan.
All five conference losses have been by single digits. … The Beavers are last in the conference standings, but seven of their remaining 11 games are at home. … Freshman PG Jared Cunningham will likely get his second straight Pac-10 start tonight. He had a career high 18 points at Cal on Saturday.

10. (9) Oregon (10-9, 2-5; 159)
Recent results:
Lost 84-69 at Stan; Lost 89-57 at Cal.
During the five-game losing streak, the Ducks have had two leads – both 2-0 – and have lost by a total of 87 points. … Those who thought new assistant Mike Dunlap would take over in the middle of the season were wrong. Athletic Director Mike Bellotti didn’t give coach Ernie Kent a vote of confidence and said he’ll “re-evaluate” Kent’s future when the season is over.
