IT’S OVER — UW 78-61.
WINDING DOWN — Gotta write the game story. Looks like a UW win.
PLAY OF THE GAME — Pondexter beat Fields to a loose ball. Both players dove to the floor, but Pondexter came up with it. He seemed to slide before retrieving it, but flipped to Gant who flushed a dunk. UW 73-59.
THOMAS SHOWS UP — UW has been milking the clock on the past three possessions. On the last one, Pondexter passed to Thomas who drained a big three-pointer with 3:17 left. UW 71-59.
GANT SHOWS UP — Gant cleaned up a Thomas missed three-pointer and sank a big putback with 6:03 left that gave UW a 66-55 lead.
TURNER SHOWS UP — Turner sank a big three-pointer that gave UW a 64-55 lead with 6:27 left.
NOW IT’S A GAME — Things are heating up. It took awhile, but the crowd is into it and it feels like a big-time Saturday night game. The students are standing and the band is playing. Pondexter vs. Fields over the last 7:47. This should be fun. UW 56-52.
FIELDS OUT — Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins is giving his star Fields a quick blow. He’ll likely return on the next timeout.
POY TIME — Pondexter is guarding Fields, but Fields isn’t defending Pondexter. UW 56-52.
THREE CHANCES — Stanford had three chances to tie the score, but came away with nothing. UW 54-52.
MORE FOUL TROUBLE — Holiday has four fouls. UW has a major problem. Holiday was doing a decent job on Fields, who has 15 points. It would seem Pondexter will have to defend Fields. The Huskies can’t lose Pondexter to foul trouble. Interesting dilemma. UW 54-48.
HUSKIES RESPOND — After an 11-1 Stanford run, Bryan-Amaning flushed a putback dunk and Holiday scored on a breakaway dunk. Bryan-Amaning is out with four fouls. UW 54-48.
DANGEROUS TIME — Green and Fields are heating up. The crowd is into it. Green snared a Thomas pass intended for Overton and scored on a layup. It’s crazy now. UW 50-48.
STANFORD MAKING A RUN — The Cardinal have started the second half with a 12-6 run to cut UW’s lead to 49-41 after five minutes. Fields is being more aggressive. He’s attacking the rim at every opportunity. Green also drained a big three-pointer on a nifty play.
SECOND HALF — Same starters.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — If not for the unlikely contribution from Igbinosa (7 points), UW would have a comfortable lead. The Huskies are doing what it has to. They’ve limited Fields (8 points, 3-for-6 shooting) and Green (5 points, 2-for-7 shooting). And Washington has gotten six points off of eight Stanford turnovers.
Thomas struggled early finding the mark, but he’s kept shooting. Good thing for UW. He’s taken 12 shots, missed eight, but has a game-high 14 points. Pondexter has started slowly, but he’s starting to find the range and get to the line. He has 11 points.
Quielty, Holiday is having a spectacular game. He’s played solid defense on Green and he has six points from hustle plays. He also has five rebounds.
Good half for UW, but this game is far from over. Stanford trailed WSU by 18 on Thursday before pulling out a 60-58 win.
The foul problems (UW has six players with two fouls) could hurt the Huskies in the second half. And it’s going to be important for Holiday to continue to contain Green.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.
HALFTIME — UW 43-32.
SHILLER GETS THREE — Strange play to end the first half. On a loose ball outside the arc, Shiller was going to throw up a prayer before Overton bailed him out with a foul. Shiller hit all three free throws.
WHO IS EMMANUEL IGBINOSA? — Igbinosa has seven points. His career high is 10. Without the senior guard’s contributions, UW would be firmly in control. UW 38-25.
GANT’S BIG CHANCE — Because of foul problems, Gant has a chance to get some big minutes. Coach Lorenzo Romar looked as if he pulled Breshers out of the game because of a defensive mistake and Gant is in. He hasn’t played more than 10 minutes in the past six games. UW 38-25.
NO PONDEXTER, NO PROBLEM — Pondexter 1 for 3, but UW’s offense is scoring at will because its defense is forcing a lot of transition buckets. UW 36-21.
MORE GOOD ACTION — Overton is hustling. He dove twice for a loose ball. Stanford eventually called a timeout and retained possession, but more importantly UW has a lot of energy. The building is dead. The band is playing, but there’s no life here. UW 32-17.
ELSTON TURNER CHECKS IN — Elston Turner makes his game debut. He’s in for Suggs. UW 28-17with 7:15 left.
GOOD ACTION, BAD SHOOTING — On consecutive possessions, UW and Stanford had three chances at baskets and came away empty. Both teams are crashing the glass. UW has 19 rebounds, Stanford 15. But UW is shooting 37.0 percent (10 of 27), Stanford 37.5 percent (6 of 16). Thomas has 10 points. UW 26-17.
NBA MOVE — Fields might have a pro future. He just got three cheap free throws when he duped Suggs into a foul behind the arc. After hitting his first foul shot, the crowd gave a mock cheer. UW 18-12.
BAD AT THE LINE — Stanford is 1 for 7 on free throws.
13-0 RUN — Stanford G Emmanuel Igbinosa scored ending a 13-0 UW run. UW 18-10.
THIRD and FOURTH SUBS — Scott Suggs is in for Thomas. Bryan-Amaning has two fouls so he’s out and Darnell Gant is in with 13:25 left. UW 12-8.
ONE MINUTE, TWO FOULS — Breshers is out after collecting two quick fouls. Bryan-Amaning is back in. Same score with 14:11.
FIRST SUBS — Venoy Overton is in for Gaddy and Tyreese Breshers relieved Bryan-Amaning. UW has its first lead 9-8 with 15:13 left.
FOLIAGE PHOBIA — Gotta admit it, the Tree mascot freaks me out.
SLOW START FOR FIELDS — After four minutes, Fields, the conference’s leading scorer, has taken just one shot. He missed a short jumper. Stan 8-6.
MATCHUPS — Thomas has Green, Gaddy is on Mann, Pondexter has Shiller and Holiay has taken Fields. Stan 8-6.
SLOW START — UW has come out a little cold, while Stanford has hit a pair of three-pointers. Green has been able to get away from Thomas. Thomas is also 0 for 2, both three-pointers. Stan 8-2.
LATE-ARRIVING CROWD — Not much of a crowd at Maples Pavilion. I heard the place was half full Thursday. Stan 5-2.
STARTING LINEUPS —- Slight change, as we noted Matthew Bryan-Amaning is in for Tyreese Breshers. He’s joined by Isaiah Thomas, Abdul Gaddy, Quincy Pondexter and Justin Holiday.
Stanford: G Drew Shiller, G Jarrett Mann, G Jeremy Green, F Jack Trotter and F Landry Fields.
STRANGE TV CREW — FSN has the game and Jim Kozimore is doing play by play alongside analyst Dan Belluomini. It’s their first time calling a UW game this season. Let me know how it goes.
RANDY HART — Ran into former UW defensive line coach Randy Hart, who was wearing a Stanford polo and sitting with his wife. Hart was with Notre Dame last season, but he was recently hired by the Cardinal. He’s coaching the defensive line.
IT’S OVER — UW 78-61.
