Pac-10 cuts back, no more free goodies at the Tournament

Interesting story in the Sports Business Journal about the cost-cutting efforts of several conferences including the Pac-10.
This is good news for the cash-strapped league, but it’s horrible news for players who arrived to Los Angeles today and might have been expecting the goodie bags the conference has traditionally given.
Who doesn’t like swag? Especially good swag? It’s one of the perks of being a student-athlete and one of the few times when players are actually allowed to accept gifts without penalty. But not any more. Not at least in the Pac-10, Big 10 and Md-American Conference.
Other conferences continue to give gift packages that might include an iPod, Nintendo Wii, Garmin GPS or Flip camcorder. The Mountain West offers a choice of a Sony 7-inch portable DVD/CD/MP3 player with case; Samsung 10 MP digital camera or Ogio rolling suitcase.
Eliminating the gifts saves the Pac-10 $300,000, according to the SBJ story.
“It was strictly a cost-containment decision,” Pac-10 Assistant Commissioner Dave Hirsch told SBJ. “It was just part of a bigger budget plan.”
