Lorenzo Romar on Marquette: “They are a scrappy team”

In an interview this morning with KJR’s Mitch Levy, coach Lorenzo Romar said the Huskies will practice in Seattle today and tomorrow before boarding a flight Tuesday for San Jose.
Wednesday’s workout is open the public and the teams plays No. 6 Marquette at 4:20 p.m. Thursday.
(What are your emotions?) “We feel pretty good about how we finish. I feel good about certain individuals. Quincy Pondexter a senior gets to go to the Big Dance on his way out. His last two years he gets to play in the NCAA tournament. Matthew Bryan-Amaning who has been criticized much has stepped up. If he doesn’t do what he did in the last part of our season, we’re not in the Big Dance. He made a huge difference. A guy like Justin Holiday who didn’t start until our last 18 games of the year comes in and becomes a very an impactful player. Just a number of guys stepping up and helping us. I’m really happy for those players.”
(Would you have gotten in if you had not beaten Cal?) “After we beat Oregon State I thought there was a chance we could get in then because everyone we needed to lose was losing, well then that quickly changes the next two days. Just about everyone that you didn’t want to win begins winning. I would say it would have been close. I’m not sure. I still think we could have been in, but it would have been close.”
(Where did you think you’d be seeded?) “I thought 10 or 11.”
(What do you know about Marquette?) “They are a scrappy, scrappy team. They really shoot the three well. They have great guard play. They know how to win close games. They’re a team that just has no quit in them and a lot of grit. They’re a tough opponent. But whoever we were going to play it was going to be a tough opponent on the other other. But this group has played in a tough conference. They play with a lot of confidence and they feel they can beat anyone.”
(Is their style similar to Washington’s?) “In some ways they do. (Lazar) Hayward is a load. He can really, really guard. He played on the same team with Quincy with USA Basketball. I was one of the coaches on the selection committee and I was there watching him for a couple of days. I was really impressed.”
(Is Marquette like Cal?) “If we’re talking about them being comparable in style of play,I’d say yeah. But I don’t know if there’s an advantage there.”
(What are the keys in the final minutes to winning a close game?) “Number 1: Get stops. Got to be able to get stops down the stretch. Number 2: Take care of the basketball. And they do a phenomenal job of that. And then No. 3: make free throws.”
(Do you know what time the game is Saturday?) “I haven’t even checked. Don’t even know.”
