Marquette game thread

IT’S OVER — UW 80-78.
PONDEXTER SCORES — Great play by Pondexter on a layup. UW 80-78 at 1.7 seconds.
SLOWING DOWN — Got to slow down on the thread and write the game story. MU 78-76 at 2:26.
ANOTHER BIG EAST SCHOOL GOES DOWN — Ohio shocked everyone and knocked off Georgetown.
I WISH I HAD TiVo’D THIS ONE — Just remember I didn’t set my recorder. Dang. Great game. We’re set up for a fantastic finish.
UW LEADS — Turner drained a big three-pointer that brought the Huskies all the way back. This crowd is nuts. Can barely hear myself think. UW 72-71 at 4:49.
WOW — Great action. Back and forth. MU 71-69.
PLEADING FOR A TECHNICAL — Pondexter and Cubillan were given technical fouls for taunting.
NEARLY ALL THE WAY BACK — Pondexter sank layup that cut MU’s lead to 66-65 at 6:43.
UW CROWD — The crowd is chanting “De-fense, De-fense!” MU 64-61 at 8:48.
HUSKIES RUNNING — Turner had a good look at a three and if it had gone in, the roof would have blown off this place. As it were, the shot bounced off the rim, but Pondexter drew a foul going after the rebound. Momentum is wearing purple. UW is on a 9-2 run. MU 62-54 at 10:55.
TOKEN PRESSURE — UW is mounting a comeback and it is doing it with pressure. The Huskies are making life uncomfortable for MU’s guards and they’re getting turnovers. Overton just scored on a layup off of a turnover that cut UW’s deficit to 62-54 at 11:34.
TURNING POINT? — Pondexter grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on the putback, which sent the UW crowd crazy. MU 60-49.
MATCHUPS — Thomas has Johnson-Odom, which isn’t good for UW because the 5-8 guard just isn’t strong enough to keep him out of the lane. MU 60-47 at 13:00.
SLIPPING AWAY — MU drained back-to-back three-pointers to take a 60-45 lead at 13:51. UW is frustrated. Pondexter just knocked over Butler and drew an offensive foul when Romar called timeout. The next five minutes may decide the game.
WHERE’S PONDEXTER? — If Pondexter doesn’t show up, UW will be hard pressed to win this game. He’s been a no-show in the second half. Not only is he not shooting the ball, he’s not doing much of anything. The Huskies have a deep team, but they can’t survive their senior captain and leader disappearing in the most important game of the season. He is 1 for 7 for four points and six rebounds. MU 54-44 at 14:55.
UW TIMEOUT — The Huskies needed a timeout to slow down the Golden Eagles who came out of the locker room smoking. During one possession, MU took five shots before Cubillan scored on a layup. Meanwhile, UW began the half with a pair of turnovers. Thomas lost the ball in the open court and Gaddy threw a pass to no one that was intercepted. UW’s offense has broken down. It’s Bryan-Amaning’s hook shots or Thomas driving and nothing else. The Huskies aren’t swinging the ball around or creating mismatches. MU 52-44 at 16:40.
EARLY MOMENTUM — Goes to Marquette. MU 50-44.
SECOND HALF — Same starters.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — This is what everybody expected. It’s by far the best game of the day in San Jose and it might be the best game of the day overall. Not sure why Pondexter isn’t hitting his free throws. He’s 2 of 6 at the line and he’s having difficulty scoring in the paint because Marquette surrounds him or fouls him.
Thomas is the first-half star. He’s bold and gutsy. He takes big shots. He drives to the paint and he delivers. Great all-around game right now. He’s got 17 poitns on 6-for-8 shooting.
Also a very good game from Bryan-Amaning. It seems like he’s getting winded, but who can blame the guy because he has to defend on the perimeter and he’s providing shut-down defense in the middle. MBA has two blocks, a steal and eight points.
Johnson-Odom (13 points) has been a problem and he’s going to continue to be a problem. He’s very good at getting to the rim on the dribble. He’s strong in the shoulders and reminds me of former Franklin standout Alvin Snow, who played at Eastern Washington.
Hayward was billed as the Marquette star, but he has a quiet five points.
Marquette is 6 of 9 on treys and Washington 6 of 10. The Huskies have shot 55.6 percent, the Golden Eagles 53.6.
For my money, Cubillan is the scariest Golden Eagle on the floor. He runs around and finds an open spot on the floor and waits for a pass to launch a three-pointer. Finding him is important.
The Huskies will also need to find a way to get more offense out of Pondexter who is 1 for 7. He has just four points.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.
HALFTIME — MU 43-42.
NO GOOD, BUT NICE —- Thomas sank a 3/4-court shot, but it won’t count because refs stopped play when MU failed to get a shot off and the shot clock expired.
THOMAS POST UP — Okay it wasn’t a real post-up move, but 5-8 Thomas had Cubillian on his back and he tried to back him down before being fouled. UW 41-36.
OVERTON HAS THREE — That’s three fouls on Overton at 3:18. He’s out and Turner is in. UW 37-34 at 3:14.
PONDEXTER IS RELENTLESS — Pondexter is attacking the basket at every opportunity. He’s going right to the rim regardless of whoever is in the paint. Perhaps he realizes MU doesn’t have a legit shot blocker and he’s just going for broke and forcing the officials to make a call. The ploy is working. UW 37-33 at 3:59.
MEDIA TIMEOUT — It’s a back and forth game. Nobody has momentum just yet. Bryan-Amaning is establishing himself on both ends of the floor. He has six points, a block and a steal. UW 33-31 at 5:46.
CUBILLIAN IS LIGHTS OUT — If you throw Cubllian the ball, you’re likely going to get an assists. He’s that good. Every time he shoots, I expect the shot to go in. UW has left him alone in the corner and I don’t know why. The Huskies should have somebody inside his shirt at all times. Thomas is starting to get into the game offensively. It seems as if he needed to slowly settle in and now he’s being much more aggressive. MU 29-28 at 7:38.
CALLING IT TIGHT — Officials are starting to tighten up the game with the whistles. No hand-checking or bumping allowed on the perimeter.
OVERTON PICKS UP TWO — That’s two fouls for Overton. He’s out and Thomas is in. Just like the Purdue game last year.
UW SUBS — No Pondexter or Thomas on the floor. Bryan-Amaning is doing a fantastic job inside. He’s blocking shots and policing the paint. MU 23-21 at 9:50.
BACK TO MAN TO MAN — Marquette has switched defenses again. It’s back to a man to man. Pondexter lost the ball on a strip in the paint. The turnover led to a MU layup. MU 20-17.
MEDIA TIMEOUT — UW’s shooting has fallen off. It’s down to 58.3. I think the zone has something to do with that. The Huskies have to find holes. It shouldn’t be too hard considering they’ve played against a lot of zone teams over the past three weeks.
THIRD SUB — Elston Turner is in for Holiday. UM 18-17 at 11;47.
MARQUETTE ZONE — The Golden Eagles has switched to a 2-3 zone. UM 18-17 at 12:07.
FIRST SUB — Venoy Overton is coming in for Gaddy and Tyreese Breshers replaced Bryan-Amaning. UW is shooting 74 percent from the floor. MU is 55.6. Washington has two turnovers, Marquette one. Good start for the Huskies.
FEELING OUT — The first few minutes seems as if both teams are getting a read on the other one. It’s a fast pace, which favors UW. Holiday has also found his stroke from the outside. Johnson-Odom looks as if he’ll be a problem to defend. He’s taken Pondexter off the dribble on two layups. It’s all a decidedly pro-UW crowd. They are much louder than the few hundred from Marquette. UW 15-12 at 14:15.
HAWES IN THE HOUSE — Hard to miss the 7-foot Spencer Hawes wearing a purple shirt and sitting in the front row.
ALMOST TIME — Finally after all the hype and buildup, we’re minutes away from the start. The building is about half full. Plenty of UW fans opposite the Husky bench.
STARTERS — No change for UW: Thomas, Abdul Gaddy, Justin Holiday, Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Quincy Pondexter.
Marquette: F Lazar Hayward, F JimmyButler, G Darius Johnson-Odom, G Maurice Acker and G David Cubillan.
NO GLOVE — Isaiah Thomas has decided to forgo wearing the padded glove to protect his injured left (shooting) hand.
HARRY THE HUSKY — Washington’s mascot stopped by press row and gave me a thumbs up. Seems like he should bark or something, but he’s a silent pup.
GAME OFFICIALS — Many have asked about the officials. Well here they are: Leslie Jones, Don Daily Michael Greenstein and Patrick Driscoll.
Daily works primarily in the Sun Belt Conference, Greenstein works Big Sky and West Coast Conference games, Driscoll is familiar with the Big East and Atlantic 10 and Jones has worked many ACC and Big East games.
EMPTY BUILDING, PLAYERS ON THE COURT — We got about 25 minutes before tip off. Both teams are going through warmups.
FIRST SESSION ENDS — Butler 77-59 over UTEP and No. 13 Murray State upset No. 4 Vanderbilt 66-65. Fans are fling out and area crews are cleaning up the place for the night session.
