New Mexico game thread

quincy smiling vs unm.JPG
IT’S OVER — UW 82-64.
SHERRER IS IN — The crowd goes wild. UW 80-61 at 1:26.
THE UW CROWD IS SHOUTING FOR SHERRER — Romar looked like he asked walkon Brendan Sherrer if he wanted to go in. The crowd wants it to happen. Maybe the game operations crew can play the Dancin’ Dawgs video. UW 80-60 at 1:40.
PONDEXTER CHECKS OUT — Romar is putting in the reserves. Pondexter is on the bench with Thomas. UW 78-59 at 2:56.
LOBOS RUNNING — New Mexico is making a run. They’ve cut UW’s lead to 72-54 at 5:35. Romar called a timeout.
SLOWING DOWN — Not the game. I’m going to begin writing the game story and slow down on the thread. Barring something crazy, the Huskies will wrap this one up in a few minutes. UW 68-45 at 9:39.
MARTINEZ LEAVES THE COURT — Martinez walked off holding a bloody bandage over his left eye. His absence hurts New Mexicos chances of pulling off a comeback. UW 60-40 at 11:54.
IT’S A 21-POINT SALUTE — Or make that a 21-point lead. New Mexico still has just four points in the second half. Alford called another timeout. It’s about all he can do. Bryan-Amaning flushed a dunk and Pondexer scored on a layup. UW 57-36 at 13:46.
FEELING GOOD — The Huskies are all smiles. It’s as if, they expect to win. Thomas and Overton are exchanging claps. Romar is still all business. He’s barking orders. And Pondexter won’t let go of his grimace. UW 53-36 at 15:27.
ALFORD CALLS TIMEOUT — Thomas drained a three-pointer at the top of the key that sent the crowd into a frenzy. New Mexico called timeout to stem the tide. Not sure what the Lobos do now. Gary can only carry them so far and Hobson just doesn’t haven it. It’s not as if the Huskies are playing great either. Perhaps that’s the scary part. The Lobos have just four points in the half and they’re on the verge of being blown out of the waterss. UW 53-36 at 15:44.
PONDEXTER HAS THREE — Pondexter picked up his third foul while trying to nab an offensive rebound. UW 44-32 at 18:56.
SECOND HALF — Same starters.

HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — Way too early to start making reservations to Syracuse, but the Huskies are 20 minutes away from the Sweet 16. They’ve dominated the first half on both ends of the court. Holiday has taken Hobson out of the game. The Mountain West Player of the Year has three points and five rebounds, but he doesn’t look like he wants to play today.
If it wasn’t for Gary (15 points) this game would be a blowout. He’s beating the Huskies at their own game. He’s putting his head down and bullying his way to the rim. He’s 7 for 11 and I don’t think he’s taken one shot outside of the paint. The Huskies just can’t keep him out of the lane. They tried Thomas and Overton. They might need to try somebody else.
Offensively, UW has created a pace that will allow them scoring opportunities if they continue to push the ball in transition and make the extra pass. Pondexter is 4 of 5 shooting for 10 points and Turner has eight points, including two three-pointers.
Thomas (nine points and five assists) has had quiet game for somebody who is playing well. He might be feeling the effects from a hard hit in the first half.
Another 20 minutes like the first 20 minutes and UW advances to the third round.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.
HALFTIME — UW 44-32.
TURNER AGAIN — Turner drained another three-pointer. Every time he touches the ball, the UNM bench yells “Shooter, shooter.” UW 44-30 at 1:20.
GARY IS BALLER — The Huskies need to worry about Gary and not Hobson. Gary has heart. He’s fearless. He dives into the paint with little regard about his body. He’s limping a bit. In the last game he hurt his ribs. UW 41-30 at 2:09.
TURNER TIME — Turner knocked down a three-pointer despite being fouled by Martinez. Turner missed the free throw. Go figure. UW 41-27 at 2:32.
PONDEXTER MAKES A HIGHLIGHT — Turner stripped Hobson at the top of the key which started a UW fastbreak. Pondexter recovered the loose ball and passed to Thomas who passed to Pondexter for a two-hand dunk. UW 36-25 at 3:15.
HOBSON UPDATE — Hobson looks as if he might have mentally checked out. He looks winded and it appears he’s frustrated because he can’t do what he normally does. Still, Gary has heart and Martinez is a senior who won’t quit. The Huskies are in the bonus and if they continue to foul, then they’ll give free points to UNM. UW 34-25 at 3:58.
HOBSON IS BACK — It looks like he wants to post up Holiday perhaps realizing his outside shot is not there. UW 34-23 at 5:03.
IT’S A 10-POINT LEAD — Alford called timeout after Thomas drained a three-pointer in front of the Lobos bench. Momentum is wearing purple. There’s a concern from UNM fans because Hobson is obviously not playing well and the offense looks out of sync. Meanwhile, the Huskies are pushing the pace. They want to run up and down the floor and see what happens. The UW crowd is chanting: “Go Huskies!” UW 31-21 at 6:44.
ANOTHER SUB — Scott Suggs is in. Also, strong move from Gaddy who scored on a layup after being fouled. UW 28-21 at 7:13.
MEDIA TIMEOUT — Good UW start. At this pace, we’re lookign at a 90-point game. That’s exactly what the Huskies want. Holiday has done a fantastic job on Hobson, UNM’s leading scorer who has three points. Gaddy is playing well and Pondexter is being aggressive. Thomas has four assists and Bryan-Amaning is 3 for 3. UW has seven assists and shooting 57 percent from the floor. Uw 25-21 at 7:54.
GADDY RETURNS — Gaddy is back in for Overton. UW 21-19 at 9:27.
MORE SUBS — Darnell Gant is in for Bryan-Amaning and Elston Turner is in.
CRAZY PACE — Washington likes to play fast, but I don’t know if Romar wants his guys playing this fast. The action is back and forth. Overton is giving as good as he gets. He’s given up two layups to sophomore reserve Nate Garth, but he’s also scored on two layups. UW 19-19 at 11:29.
BIG HIT — While diving for a loose ball, 225-pound Hardeman landed on 5-8 Thomas. Thomas shrugged it off, but it looked painful. UW 15-15.
LOBOS GO ZONE — New Mexico switched to a zone and Thomas busted it for a three-pointer at the top of the key. UNM 13-11 at 15:12.
FIRST SUB — Venoy Overton is in for Gaddy.
MEDIA TIMEOUT — Pondexter is leaving Martinez to help out in the paint and UW has gotten burned once for it. If Pondexter continues, it could be a problem. Holiday is doing a nice job early with Hobson despite giving up a three-pointer. Hobson hasn’t really been involved in the offense and if he’s going to be relegated to a jump shooter, then that bodes well for UW. UNM 11-8 at 15:55.
SCORING EASY — The Huskies scoring after made baskets, which is a good sign for them. Hobson drained a three-pointer. UNM 11-8 at 16:14.
GOOD PACE — The game is starting fast. The pace favors the Huskies. UNM 4-5 at 18:23.
STARTERS — No change for UW: Isaiah Thomas, Abdul Gaddy, Quincy Pondexter, Justin HOliday and Matthew Bryan-Amaning.
New Mexico: F A.J. Hardeman, F Roman Martinez, G, Phillip McDonald, G Dairese Gary and Hobson.
HOBSON UPDATE — Darington Hobson, UNM’s injured star junior guard, is on the court. He looks fine. He has a bandage around his sprained left wrist. He’s been shooting the ball and grimaces occasionally.
TODAY’S REFS — Tom Eades, Patrick Driscoll, Mike Sanzere and William McCarthy. Eades is a 14-year veteran who works SEC and Missouri Valley Games. Driscoll worked UW’s game Thursday. He’s also a 14-year veteran with experience in the Big East and Atlantic10. Sanzere is another 14-year guy who has worked in the Missouri Valley and Mid-American Conference. McCarthy has 12 years of experience in the Northeast Conference and America East.
BIG GAME FOR EVERYONE — The players aren’t the only ones who are putting their game face on.

PONDEXTER FOCUSED — Quincy Pondexter (below) is wearing his mean look once again. Take a look at the scowl on his face.

ROMAR WALK — Here’s some pre-game pictures to get you in the mood. The team stayed at the Crowne Plaza, which is about five minutes away from HP Pavilion. That’s Lorenzo Romar below.
