Coach Lorenzo Romar is out recruiting and he was unavailable yesterday when the big news broke about Clarence Trent (above) trying out for the football team.
In a statement released by Washington, he commented on the situation.

“Clarence approached me earlier in the year and expressed his interest in playing football at the University of Washington and I told him we’d revisit it after the season. I had some conversations with [head coach Steve Sarkisian] Sark about it and when they agreed to do it, Clarence was excited and we were excited for him.
“He will still remain a part of our basketball team and it will be much like the situation when Nate Robinson played football at Washington and yet walked on for basketball that year. So, he is still very much a part of our basketball team and he will do both.
“We’ll be pulling for him and as interested as I already was in Husky Football, I’m even more interested now.”

— Here’s Bob Condotta’s write-up on Trent, a 6-5 freshman forward, who is making the switch to football and defensive end.
— Things are getting a bit wacky in Eugene as the Ducks continue their coaching search. After reports surfaced that Minnesota’s Tubby Smith was offered a $2 million contract, he denied having any contact with Oregon.
Now the Oregonian is reporting Pitt’s Jamie Dixon has been offered the job, but he went on a Pittsburgh radio show and declined to talk about it. Not sure what’s happened with the story about Oregon luring Tom Izzo away from Michigan State.
Clearly it looks as if the Ducks want to make a big splash when I thought they’d go after Saint Mary’s. Heck even Baylor’s Scott Drew or Butler’s Brad Stevens might be a good choice.
— UCLA dismissed sophomore center J’mison Morgan from the basketball team yesterday and he’ll transfer to a school close to his home in Dallas. The 6-10 center averaged 2.1 points and 1.1 rebounds.
— Also, UCLA assistant Donny Daniels is leaving the Bruins and will join Mark Few’s staff with Gonzaga.
— What’s happening on the Palouse? In addition to Xavier Thames, Anthony Brown and Michael Harthun, Washington State loses another player … walk-on John Allen. That’s four players leaving Wazzu.
