It’s Official: Pac-10 Extends Invite To Utah

The Pac-10 extended an invitation to Utah to join the conference and university officials are expected to say yes.
The school has arranged a press conference at Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium tower at noon Thursday.
UPDATED: 3:12 p.m.
Lots of reaction coming in about adding the Utes to the Pac-10.
— According to the Associated Press: “Utah officials have long been frustrated about their inability to play for a football national championship while in the Mountain West. Utah had an undefeated season in 2008 but was not invited to the national title game. It defeated Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. Utah also went undefeated in 2004 and did not play for the national championship.
“Utah’s lawmakers contend the BCS formula is flawed and gives schools from the major conferences an unfair advantage that would make it impossible for a school like the Mountain West’s Brigham Young to win the national title, as the Cougars did in 1984 when they were a member of the WAC.”
Salt Lake Tribune columnist Gordon Monson questions whether the lure of millions is worth Utah giving up its big-fish-in-little-pond title to swim in a Pac-10 shark tank.
— The Tribune’s Kurt Kragthorpe believes Utah is deserving of the invitation, but wonders if cross-state rival BYU would have been a better choice.
— Here’s the news story from the Tribune.
— ESPN.com’s Pac-10 blogger Ted Miller speculates the 12-team new conference could begin in 2011-12 rather than 2012-13, which many believed would be the start date.
