Overton out a few weeks; Simmons cleared to practice

Venoy Overton missed the past three weeks after injuring his left hamstring while going up for a layup during an open run.
The Huskies senior guard re-aggravated the injury during UW’s two-day training camp over the weekend. He’s expected to sit out the rest of the month and hopes to return for the Nov. 6 exhibition against Saint Martin’s University.
“It’s definitely worst than what I thought it would be. I thought I would be back (by now), but it’s been like a month. It’s just not what I expected.”
The injury has reduced Overton to a spectator at practice. He receives massages and rides the exercise bike, but the main treatment is rest.
“Maybe if this would have happened when you were a freshman you wouldn’t mind as much, but your senior year that’s the worst time it could happen because it’s your last go-around,” Overton said. “Definitely this is the worst feeling in the world.”
Freshman Desmond Simmons who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee has been cleared to play.
After three days of practices, Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said the Huskies are a better shooting team than he’s had before.
He talked about 7-foot center Aziz N’Diaye and said he’s “a big guy that we’ve haven’t had before.”
Romar hasn’t selected starters, but said he has the option of playing big, small or starting a team of shooters, penetrators or defenders.
I’m going into to watch a few minutes of practice and will return with more notes and observations.
