Saint Martin’s game thread

CHECK BACK — Stop back in a few hours and I’ll have some post-game notes, quotes and observations.
IT’S OVER — 97-76.
ANOTHER WALK-ON — Antoine Hosley is in the game.
ALMOST OVER — Walk-on Brendan Sherrer checks in. UW 95-74, 1:56.
BIG APPLAUSE — N’Diaye got a huge ovation after sinking a free throws and putting in a putback. UW 88-66, 5:06.
SLOWING DOWN — Got to slow down on the thread and right the game story. The Huskies have regained the momentum and the Saints appear lost. Thomas found Ross for a layup and Wilcox drained an open trey. UW 79-54, 9:29.
CAUSING HAVOC — Even without Overton, the Huskies are doing a great job of pressuring SMU’s ball handlers. They’ve forced 20 turnovers and scored 20 points off of TOs. UW 74-54, 10:04.
STILL IN CONTROL, BUT … — Not sure if Romar is going to be pleased with the uneven effort in the second half. It actually looks as if the Huskies are getting tired and they’re making mental mistakes. At times they’re going way too fast. Thomas either needs new shoes or he needs to slow down because he’s dribbling so fast he’s fallen down a few times when no one is near him. UW 66-54, 11:44.
NICE PLAY — After a turnover, Holiday was able to get the ball to the rim where Ross made an athletic play and sank a layup. The Saints are still hanging around. UW 66-54, 12:53.
WE GOT OURSELVES A GAME — SMU pulled to within 10 points. UW 62-52, 13:53.
SIMMONS IS IN — The freshman checked in to give UW a little more size. UW 62-49, 14:51.
GETTING PUSHED AROUND AGAIN — This is going to be a theme all season. At times the Huskies just don’t have the size to go for rebounds and clean up the glass. Holiday is outstanding tonight, but he has the difficult task of playing the other team’s power forward and he’s giving up too much size. UW 62-47, 15:17.
FT TROUBLES — Bryan-Amaning is 1 for 7 at the line.
N’DIAYE OUT — He has four fouls. UW 62-45, 16:59.
EARLY FOUL TROUBLE — N’Diaye has three fouls. UW-58-42, 17:54.
SAME STARTERS — No change in the starting lineup.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — Solid start for the Huskies. Holiday has shown amazing confidence offensively. He’s not hesitating with the jumper and has converted 5 of 7 shots, including 3 for 3 on treys. Suggs is also great offensively. And Bryan-Amaning is able to do whatever he wants against 6-foot-5 Poole who is unable to block his shot or even affect it that much. But here’s the weird thing, Thomas has not taken a shot. Don’t know if I’ve ever seen that. He’s 3 of 4 at the free throw line. He’s being a playmaker and creating shots for others. The Huskies don’t need his three-pointer because they have so many shooters and Thomas has been unable to drive to the lane without getting a foul. Gaddy looks good early on. The odd man out of the rotation is junior Darnell Gant who did not play in the first half.
HALFTIME STATS — Holiday, Bryan-Amaning and Suggs are the leading scorers with 14, 13 and 11 respectively. Thomas has a game-high seven assists to go with three points. UW is shooting 62.5 percent, including 7 for 8 on three-pointers. The Huskies are being outrebounded 19-15.
HALFTIME — UW 55-36.
FAST-PACED GAME — The Huskies hit the 50-point mark with just under two minutes left. Gaddy scored on back-to-back dribble drive layups. UW 50-34.
CHANNELING OVERTON — Thomas has two steals and he’s terrorizing the SMU guards. UW 48-34, 2:05.
THOMAS THE DISTRIBUTOR — Just because he’s not scoring, that doesn’t mean Thomas isn’t having a huge impact on the game. He’s playing a traditional point guard role and distributing the ball. He has a game-high six assists.
SIMMONS CHECKS IN — Freshman Desmond Simmons subs for Holiday. UW 43-29, 3:30.
SLOW OFFENSIVE START FOR THE GUARDS — UW’s backcourt is supposed to be its strength, however, with t he exception of Suggs, the guards have struggled in the early going offensively. Thomas, Gaddy and Wilcox each have two points.
IN CONTROL — The Huskies are firmly in control. Gaddy has played a smart game while Thomas has had a long seat on the bench. The defense, however, has been problematic at times. The Saints are hurting the Huskies with their big front line. UW 30-20, 7:39.
NICE STEAL — Bryan-Amaning jumped around a player for a steal before splitting a double team with a behind-the-back dribble. He was fouled on the play, but missed the FT. UW 28-18, 8:11.

HOLIDAY IS THE EARLY STAR — Holiday came in and quickly sank a three-pointer. He has a game-high eight points on 3-for-4 shooting. UW 21-12, 11:28.
N’DIAYE IS RAW — N’Diaye got himself in trouble defensively on two trips down court. He failed to switch and gave up a short jumper, then he picked up a silly foul. Romar took him out and replaced him with Holiday.
SECOND SUBS — Terrence Ross is in for Holiday. Bryan-Amaning returns and he’s on the court with N’Diaye giving UW a big lineup. The other Huskies are Thomas, Wilcox and Ross. UW 13-10, 13:40.
OVERPOWERED — The Huskies are being pushed around by SMU’s taller front line. At times, 6-6 Holiday is defending 6-11 Matt Dodson. UW 13-10, 14:11.
FIRST SUBS — C.J. Wilcox and Aziz N’Diaye are coming into the game for Gaddy and Bryan-Amaning. UW 13-8, 15:33.
UW TAKES OVER — The Huskies hit three three-pointers. First Holiday, then Suggs drained two. UW 11-6.
SAINTS EARLY LEAD — SMU has jumped ahead 6-2.
FIRST BASKETS — Gaddy got beat for a layup and Holiday cleaned up the glass for a putback. UW 2-2.
STARTING LINEUPS – G Scott Suggs gets the start for UW. The other starters are Isaiah Thomas, Abdul Gaddy, Justin Holiday and Bryan-Amaning.
For St. Martin’s:
G – Galen Squiers
G – Brady Bombers
F – Roger O’Neill
F – Jeremy Green
C – Blake Poole
NICE LOOK JAMAAL — Jamaal Williams is looking good on the UW bench wearing a dark suit and tie. If you didn’t know better, you might think he was the head coach.
NO MASK – Matthew Bryan-Amaning who broke his nose this week in practice is not wearing a mask during pre-game warmups. He looks as if he’ll play. We’ll see.
SPARSE CROWD — There’s about 200-300 hundred folks inside the building. Maybe they were watching the football game.
IT’S JUST YOU AND ME — No TV. No radio. No online streaming. I’ll update as much as I can. It should be a fun one. The Huskies and Saints are on the court. Tip off is about 15 minutes away.
