Michigan State game thread

IT’S OVER — MSU 76-71.
WILCOX SUBS IN — Smart move by Romar to put Wilcox in. But he shot an air ball.
BRYAN-AMANING — The Huskies designed a play for Bryan-Amaning. He drove to the right and drew a foul. He made one of two. UW fouled. MSU 71-72, 8.3.
HERE WE GO — UW trails 72-70 with 28.2 seconds left. Great game.
BIG SHOT — Summers slipped around a screen and raced away from Holiday just long enough to knock down a three-pointer. MSU 69-68, 2:05.
LUCAS IS DOWN — Lucas is holding his left knee after wrestling with Bryan-Amaning for a rebound. Bryan-Amaninig landed on Lucas’ knee. Lucas walked off the court grimacing. Same score. 2:42.
BAD CALL — The refs missed one and called a foul on Sherman when he stripped Bryan-Amaning. It helps the Huskies, but it was a bad call. UW 66-66, 3:14.
LOTS OF FAITH IN ROSS — Romar is showing he trusts freshman Ross and is playing him down the stretch in some very important minutes of a very important game. UW 66-64, 3:59.
HOLIDAY AGAIN — Holiday is having himself a heckuva game. The Husky senior drained a three-pointer that put UW up 66-64 with less than six minutes left.
PRETTY PLAY — Lucas blew by Overton on the baseline and made a difficult layup despite being fouled and before falling down. UW 63-62, 6:58.
SOFT RIMS — Ross drained a three-pointer and was the benefit of the soft rim at UW’s end. UW 63-60.
TIED AGAIN — Keith Appling converted a tough layup. UW 56-56.
GOOD DEFENSE — The Huskies have forced a couple of shot clock violations. UW 56-54, 10:00.
ROSS SUBS IN — The freshman replaces Suggs. UW 54-52.
HUSKIES FIGHT BACK — Scott Suggs connected with N’Diaye for a layup and Thomas found Suggs on a long pass that led to a highlight dunk. UW 54-51, 11:39.
UH-OH — Lucas popped a three-pointer. MSU 51-50, 14:10.
REALLY COLD — Thomas missed two of three free throws. UW 50-48.
GONE COLD — The Spartans are on an 8-0 run. UW 49-48.
MSU’S MO — This is the third Spartans game I’ve watched and they’re following the same pattern where they fall behind early and storm back in the second half. This team has no quit in them. Even in the loss to Connecticut, it was a dog fight. The Huskies can’t relax. They’ll need to grind it out for the next 15:35 if they want to win. UW 49-45, 15:35.
WE GOT A GAME AGAIN — Lucas nailed a long jumper. UW 49-45, 15:58.
SHERMAN COMES ALIVE — Sherman has scored six points for MSU. UW 49-40, 18:38.
SECOND HALF — Same starters for both teams.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — Looks like Washington put the Kentucky game behind them. There’s no Husky hangover this afternoon. Sure there were some slow moments in the first half and UW fell behind by seven (20-13), but it picked up the intensity on defense, which has stymied Michigan State and ignited the Huskies’ offense.
It’s been a balanced offensive attack for UW. Thomas leads with 10 points, but Holiday (nine points) and Gant (seven) were key contributors. Gant hasn’t missed on three shots and he’s developing a knack for getting open. Thomas’ accuracy may be off, but he’s finding open teammates and has a game-high four assists.
Green is a mismatch nightmare, but Holiday is defending him pretty well despite giving away nearly 40 pounds. Lucas leads everyone with 11 points.
Washington played best when Gant and N’Diaye were on the floor. That’s a nice pairing. The Huskies also had success with Overton, Holiday and a shooter in the backcourt.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.
HALFTIME — UW 44-34.

WHERE’S THE CALL — Thomas is upset and pleading for a foul after driving into the MSU forest, getting bumped and falling hard to the floor. An official nearby shook his head and said no. UW 43-34, 57.3.
FORGOTTEN MAN — Feels like Gant is the forgotten man, but he’s played big in the past two games. UW 43-34, 1:34.
DOUBLE-DIGIT LEAD — UW has extended its advantage by 10. UW 39-29, 2:39.
SETTLING DOWN — After UW’s run, the game has settled down and both teams look like prize fighters who are feeling each other out. Maybe everyone is tired, but the action has slowed down. Overton made a nice steal, but failed to convert on a contested layup. UW 37-29, 3:44.
HOLIDAY IS BACK — Holiday checked in for Thomas. The lineup: Holiday, Overton, Wilcox, Gant and N’Diaye. It’s a good lineup. With a lot of versatility. Tall and shooters. UW 36-27, 4:29.
BIGGEST LEAD — UW 36-27, 5:22.
HOLIDAY’S SHOW — Holiday has a game-high nine points.
HUSKIES RUN — Washington is on a 14-5 run sparked by Holiday. The Huskies are getting in passing lanes, creating steals and they’re converting transition baskets. Holiday had one as did Gaddy. UW 27-25, 7:59.
HOLIDAY COMES ALIVE — Holiday ripped Thornton and drove for a layup. Minutes later, he drove hard in the lane and converted a difficult layup over Payne. Holiday picked up a technical foul for yelling at Payne after the play. UW 23-23, 9:15.
BIG HIT — Thomas was floored by a hard pick from Roe. MSU 20-15.
EARLY TROUBLES — Where is the offense going to come from? Thomas? He’s having difficulties finding holes. Holiday? He’s floating around. Bryan-Amaning? He has a tough matchup down low. Gaddy? Maybe. But he’s got to start looking for his shot. The shooters? MSU has them covered like a blanket. The Huskies got to pick it up on the defensive end, create some steals and get their their transition game going. MSU 17-11, 11:37.
MSU’S PACE — If this game is a test of wills, the Spartans have the early lead. It’s a half-court kind of game. Very slow. Not good for Washington. MSU 14-11, 12:36.
SECOND SUB — Aziz N’Diaye is in for Bryan-Amaning. MSU 14-11, 14:08.
SPARTANS ARE BIG — When MSU goes to the bench, they bring in some big boys in Draymond Green (6-7) and Adreian Payne (6-10). They’re clogging the paint and making life miserable for Bryan-Amaning. MSU 12-11.
HEALTH UPDATE — Korie Lucious is fine. He’s in the game and is not favoring his ankle. MSU 12-10, 15:06.
FIRST SUB — Venoy Overton is in for Gaddy. UW 9-9, 16:08.
BRYAN-AMANING — MSU is not double-teaminig him and they’re defending him with Sherman. Bryan-Amaning should have a big day. UW 7-7, 16:32.
GOOD START — The Huskies have forced a turnover and they’re keeping the Spartans out of the paint. UW 5-2.
STARTING LINEUPS — No change UW: Thomas, Abdul Gaddy, Justin Holiday, Darnell Gant and Bryan-Amaning.
Michigan State:
F – Delvon Roe
C – Garrick Sherman
G – Austin Thornton
G – Durrell Summers
G – Kalin Lucas
EXTRA FREE THROWS — Isaiah Thomas, Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Aziz N’Diaye were the last off the court taking free throw shots.
EARLY CROWD — Not sure if the 2,400-seat arena will sell out and it looks as if the crowd is evenly split between purple-clad Huskies and green-wearing Spartans.
WARMUPS — Both teams are on the court.
OFFICIALS: Tim Higgins (ACC, Atlantic 10, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12), Jeffrey Clark (A-10, Big East, Colonial, Ivy) and Gerry Pollard (Big 12, Conference USA, Summit and Sunbelt). HIggins and Clark worked UW’s game against Virginia.
