Don’t look now, but Wazzu is carrying the Pac-10 flag

Really wish one of the local news agencies had the resources and foresight to cover the Diamond Head Classic because it feels like we’re missing a really big story this week in Honolulu.
Washington State is making a real statement after posting a 2-0 record with some nice wins the past two days. The Cougars advance to the tournament final after yesterday’s 77-71 victory over No. 15 Baylor.
Got to admit, they nearly Couged it. Wazzu led by 20 points (55-35) with 14:32 remaining in the second half when Baylor went on a 29-6 run that gave the Bears a 64-61 lead with 6:38 left. That’s when Klay Thompson took over. He scored eight points in the final 4:33, including two three-pointers.
Thompson finished with a team-high 20 points and Washington State improved to 10-1. The Cougars face Butler in the tournament final on Saturday and a win likely vaults them into the top 25 of the rankings next week.
FRIDAY MORNING LINKS:
— After pulling off the upset at No. 19 Tennessee this week, USC returned home on ah high, but the Trojans didn’t slip up and routed Leigh 76-49 behind 21 points from newcomer Jio Fontan who made his home debut.
— UCLA beat UC Irvine, but the Bruins can’t be feeling good about their 74-73 win. The Anteaters had chance to win and had the ball in the final seconds, but could not get off a clean shot. UCLA (8-4) plays WSU on Wednesday in the Pac-10 opener.
— For some reason, Arizona State fell behind by 12 points at home to a North Carolina A&T team picked to finish near the bottom of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Sun Devils managed to come back and win 56-50, but it’s got to be troubling to ASU fans why the Devils were down by so much, so late in the game. It’s also got to concerning why coach Herb Sendek needed to bench four starters and why his players weren’t focused on the game.
He told the Arizona Republic: “They have a game, they’re all hustling to the airport. With a disproportionate number of newcomers, these guys haven’t been home (in a while), so I know it’s just human nature (to look) forward to hustling out of here.”
That’s a pretty lame excuse.
