Thomas, Williams, Thompson named to all-region team

Washington junior Isaiah Thomas, Arizona sophomore Derrick Williams and Washington State junior Klay Thompson were named to the Mercury News All-Region team.
The players include: San Diego State forward Kawhi Leonard and St. Mary’s guard Mickey McConnell.
WEDNESDAY MORNING LINKS:
— UW forward Darnell Gant said there’s no stopping Arizona forward Derrick Wiliams, however, the Huskies must limit his touches.
— Arizona coach Sean Miller has been openly critical of point guard Lamont Jones in the past and he told the Arizona Daily Star the key to a successful week in Washington is avoiding turnovers from the guards. Miller said: “On this trip, our point guard play is going to be very important. Taking care of the ball, running our team, defending guards like we’re going to play against. I think we’ll continue to learn more about where we are at that position.”
— Arizona forward Solomon Hill told the Arizona Daily Wilcat this week’s games at Washington and Washington State is a make or break series. He said: “This shows us who we are and where we stand in the Pac-10.”
Abdul Gaddy, who underwent knee surgery last week, misses the chance to play against the team he originally committed to. The sophomore guard had one of his best games last year at Arizona in an 87-70 UW defeat.
— USC coach Kevin O’Neill’s gruff, in-your-face coaching style isn’t for everyone and freshman Bryce Jones has had enough. After losing his job to Fordham transfer Jio Fontan and playing just four minutes against Oregon State in the previous game, Jones announced he was leaving the Trojans.
— Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke writes about the pressure on UCLA coach Ben Howland to return the Bruins to prominence.
— Nice story in the Oregonian about Oregon State forward Kevin McShane, a walk-on and team captain, who is arguably the Beavers’ MVP.
