The Pac-10 awarded Washington junior guard Isaiah Thomas the Player of the Week award after he averaged 20.5 points, 9.0 assists, 6.0 rebounds and and 2.0 steals in wins over Arizona and Arizona State last week at Edmundson Pavilion.
It’s the second time this season and in his career that he’s won the award.
In a 85-68 win over the Wildcats on Thursday, Thomas finished with his second-consecutive double-double (22 points and 10 assists). He became just the second UW player with back-to-back 10 assist games and the first NCAA player since Northeastern’s Jose Juan Barea in February 2006 to post two-straight games with at least 20 points and 10 assists.
Two days later, Thomas recorded 19 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals while leading the Huskies to an 88-75 win over the Sun Devils. In the second half, he shutdown ASU’s top player Ty Abbott and held him to seven points after halftime.
Thomas beat out five players around the league for the award, but his biggest competition came from teammate Matthew Bryan-Amaning who scored a career-high 30 points Saturday.
“I have to thank God and my teammates because without them, I’m half the player I am,” Thomas said in a release from UW. “I have to especially call out Matthew Bryan-Amaning, who had a lot to do with my success. It (the award) was a toss up and I feel that we shared this award for his play this past week.”
Thomas is seventh on UW’s all-time assist list with 312 and 13th on the school’s scoring list with 1,456.
Also Nominated: Arizona’s Derrick Williams, California’s Harper Kamp, Oregon’s E.J. Singler, UCLA’s Lazeric Jones and Washington State’s DeAngelo Casto.
