Arizona game thread

IT’S OVER — Arizona 87-86.
GREAT CALL BY ROMAR — He told the refs to make sure the time was right on the clock. By doing so, he’s allowed to huddle with his guys. And 2.2 is left.
DOWN ONE — UA 87-86, 17.5 seconds.
HERE WE GO — This game will be decided in the final minutes. Not to be the bearer of bad news, but the Huskies are 0-4 in games decided by five points or less. UW 86-85, 1:36.
JUST ONE TIMEOUT LEFT — Overton was forced to burn a timeout. Washington has just one more. UA 78-76, 5:06.
GREAT GAME — The action is getting intense now. Both teams have picked it up. Washington is scoring at will on the pick n roll and Arizona is scoring on the hustle plays. This place is loud. So loud you can barely hear the guy next to you. UA 78-76, 5:13.
THE HUSKIES ARE RUNNING — The Huskies are on a 9-0 run. UW 72-68, 7:38.
FIRST LEAD — Ross scored on a putback. UW 70-68, 8:26.
ALL THE WAY BACK — Wilcox tied it with a three-pointer. UW 68-68.
COULD HAVE TIED IT — Thomas missed a three-pointer that could have tied the score. UA 68-65, 9:30.
THOMAS TAKING OVER — Thomas and Bryan-Amaning have connected on three straight UW possession for a basket. It’s the pick and roll and they’re executing it to perfection. Thomas is delivering some incredible passes and Bryan-Amaning is finishing with force at the rim. UA 64-58, 11:59.
N’DIAYE LATE — According an internet report, N’Diaye was late for the team bus.
ARIZONA’S GUARD PLAY IS SUSPECT — Miller benched Jones and Fogg for sloppy ball handling. The Wildcats have committed five turnovers in this half. UA 54-48, 16:42.
SECOND HALF — The frenetic pace continues. Washington squandered a pair of fast break chances that were created on steals. First Thomas’ layup was blocked by Fogg. Secondly Holiday committed a turnover on a fast break. UA 54-48, 17:04.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — Anyone who tells you the Huskies are being outworked is crazy. Washington is hustling. The UW players are playing hard. They’re doing everything they can. They’re contesting shots. They have six blocks. They’re rotating on defense. They’re taking charges. They’re scoring fast break layups off of made baskets.
Arizona is simply playing a little better. The Wildcats have made 8 of 10 three-pointers. I’m sorry if a team makes 8 of 10 on treys in 20 minutes, that’s a sign that it’s not your day. UA is also 11 of 13 at the line. And the Wilcats are shooting 15 of 34 from the field.
Again Arizona is playing at a very high level.
Still this game is far from over. It’s crazy to think Arizona can continue to shoot like this for another half. The law of averages says they cool off and the Huskies have to be ready to take advantage when they get their chances.
Williams and Ross lead all scorers with 11 points.
HALFTIME — UA 49-40.

LAST PLAY — Thomas lost the ball on UW’s last possession and the Wildcats failed to score on a fast break. Not sure what the refs are looking at as they huddle around the monitor.
HIGHLIGHT — Parrom looked as if he got a clean block on Thomas’ layup, but the refs called a foul. The Huskies caught a break. Thomas hit one of two. USa 43-36, 1:23.
MEDIA TIMEOUT — The Huskies are shooting 50 percent and they have six turnovers. Jerry Brewer says: “It seems like everything is out of whack and the pace of the game is just so fast.” UA 37-29, 3:41.
TIMEOUT WORKED — Since the timeout, the Wildcats have scored seven straight points. UA 37-25, 4:19.
TIMEOUT ARIZONA — Miller senses momentum is changing and he called a timeout. Romar is still urging his team any way he can. He’s clapping. He’s yelling. He’s going nuts. UA 30-25, 6:25.
HILL TECHNICAL — Hill picked up a technical foul. Thomas made one of two free throws. UA 31-22, 7:26.
GREAT GAME — Media timeout. The Huskies are in this. They’re hanging with the Wildcats who have slowed down after a fast start. Both teams are playing at a high level. Thomas was out of extended minutes. It will be interesting to see if the Huskies can hold up. They’re thin and they’re picking up fouls. UA 30-22, 7:43.
ARIZONA STARTERS RETURN — Miller has re-inserted his starters. UA 27-20, 9:00.
ONLY DOWN FIVE — Washington is hanging around and looks as if it is weathering the early storm. UA 25-20, 9:53.
TWO ON N’DIAYE — The big guy picked up his second foul going over the back of a Arizona player for a rebound he had no chance of getting. He’s out of the game. Gant is back in. UA 25-15, 11:26.
KILLING WITH THREES — Arizona is 4 of 5 on three-pointers. Obviously the Wildcats are comfortable at home shooting from distance. The Huskies need to stick with the shooters and just live with whatever Williams does inside. UA 25-15, 11:47.
ARIZONA SUBS — Arizona coach Sean Miller has swapped out most of the starters. Only Williams remains. UA 19-13, 12:45.
ANOTHER SUB — C.J. Wilcox is in. UA 16-6, 15:58.
GOING ZONE — Washington switched to a zone defense. It worked for awhile, but Fogg got off a three-pointer as the shot clock was winding down. It fell through the net despite being fouled. He’ll shoot a free throw when play resumes. UA 15-6, 15:58.
ROMAR IS INTO IT — Romar is on the sidelines and looks as if he’s ready to play. He’s in a low stance. He’s running around. He’s barking orders. Maybe the Huskies will see how much he wants this game. He’s into it.
FIRST FOUL ON N’DIAYE — We’ll track a few of these. Perry is at the line and he sank one of two. UA 12-4,16:44.
HERE COMES N’DIAYE — N’Diaye checks in. Whatever it was, Romar felt he needs the big 7-footer. UA 11-2, 17:19.
QUICK TIMEOUT — Coach Lorenzo Romar called a quick timeout. The Wildcats have raced out the gate. They’re scoring at will. Hill has two baskets and Jones just sank a three-pointer. It’s bad right now for the Huskies. UA 9-2, 17:37.
MATCHUPS — Fogg has Thomas. Jones is on Overton. Williams has Bryan-Amaning.
IT’S ELECTRIC — This place is rocking during UA introductions. Loud chants: “U of A, U of A.” Oh boy. The Huskies will need to manage their emotions. I’m not playing and I’m already hyped. Here we go. Tip off in a few seconds.
WHAT’S UP WITH N’DIAYE — UW says not starting N’Diaye is Romar’s decision. No further explanation. We’ll look into that after the game. Seems like there’s more there.
STARTING LINEUPS: Slight change for UW. Darnell Gant is starting in place of Aziz N’Diaye. No change with the rest of the lineup: Thomas, Overton, Justin Holiday and Matthew Bryan-Amaning.
Arizona: G Lamont Jones, G Kyle Fogg, F Derrick Williams, F Jesse Perry and F Solomon Hill.
SWAGGERLESS — Arizona isn’t really a cocky bunch. In fact, they’re anti-cocky. Derrick Williams is quiet. Perhaps Lamont Jones is the most fiery of the bunch.
INTERESTING NOTE — In today’s Arizona Daily Star, the newspaper noted the Pac-10 only has 12 fourth-year seniors and Venoy Overton leads the bunch with 128 games played.
ONE MORE NOTE ON THE UNIFORMS — As we noted, Arizona is in all white. And with Washington in black, this game has a good guys vs. bad guys feel. That’s OK. Venoy Overton told me he liked being the villain and he wants to ruin Arizona’s big party.
BACK IN BLACK — Seems like whenever there’s a big game, the Huskies break out their black uniforms. They’re wearing the alternative gear today. Wish I had charted UW’s win-loss record with the black jerseys.
TWENTY-MINUTES AWAY — We’re about half full. I wonder if the wind storm is slowing folks down.
ONLINE OPTION — ESPN3 is providing streaming video of today’s game.
ESPN — In case you didn’t know, ESPN has the call. Brad Nessler is the play-by-play announcer and Jimmy Dykes is providing commentary.
THIRTY MINUTES AWAY — Arizona is back on the court and the fans are going crazy.
BYE, BYE COUGARS — Washington State can kiss that at-large NCAA tournament berth goodbye. The Cougars lost 71-69 at Arizona today. They’ll need to win the Pac-10 tournament to make it to the NCAA tourney.
WHITEOUT IS BUILDING — Some Arizona students (below) have filled a few sections of the McKale Center.

DRESSED, BUT NOT READY — Scott Suggs is dressed in warmups, but he’s sitting on a courtside seat watching the Huskies get ready for today’s game.
WIND STORM — There’s a wind storm in Arizona, which temporarily closed Interstate 10 that connects Phoenix to Tucson, Ariz. Traffic is backed up for miles. We’ll see how it affects today’s attendance.
EARLY START — Made it to the arena. When I walked out, Terrence Ross was on the floor shooting free throws. Isaiah Thomas came out next followed by Venoy Overton.
