Two days ago, the Pac-10 reprimanded California coach Mike Montgomery (above) for publicly criticizing the referees.
Today the NCAA placed the Golden Bears on two-year probation for making more than 300 impermissible recruiting phone calls shortly after he was hired in April 2008.
Here’s a look at the public report.
MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas, the chairman of the infractions committee, said the investigation determined the violations were a case of neglect more than “an intentional effort to circumvent the rules.”
The probation runs through Feb. 24, 2013. The additional penalties handed down today include a public reprimand and censure. Cal is also limited to five official paid visits for each of the next two academic years.
