A couple of stories on the blogosphere about UCLA freshman Joshua Smith (above) who returns home Thursday when the Bruins face the Huskies.
Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said he began recruiting Smith in the eighth grade and immediately noticed “everyone else was up to his knees.”
Arizona coach Sean Miller said: “His physical size and his ability to catch and finish and UCLA’s execution to get him the ball is alarming.”
USC coach Kevin O’Neill said: “He may end up being the best player out of this league at the next level.”
Smith fouled out in Washington’s 74-63 win on Dec. 31 in Los Angeles, but Bruins coach Ben Howland said Smith has been improved each week.
Smith told the Los Angeles Times that he expects a rude welcome from the UW student section. He admitted he was unnerved by a fan when UCLA played at USC, but said he’s more mature now.
Smith’s mom went to school at UW and took a class with Romar. Smith said he nearly chose the Huskies, but fell in love with UCLA when he visited the campus.
He said he’s excited about playing near his hometown of Kent, Wash. even though he’s wearing UCLA powder blue instead of UW purple.
“In their opinion,” Smith told the LA Times, “I’m a traitor.”
