King County prosecutors declined last month to file sexual assault charges against Venoy Overton (above), but the Washington senior faces charges of supplying alcohol to two underage girls. The charge, a gross misdemeanor, were filed today. It carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail.
The charge stems from a January 8 incident in which Overton picked up two 16-year-old girls and drove them to his sister’s South Seattle apartment. Along the way, he allegedly bought alcohol.
The girls told Seattle Police they had shots of alcohol at the apartment and claimed Overton was smoking marijuana.
One girl told police she was compelled to perform sexual acts on Overton after watching her friend perform sex acts on him.
One of the girls filed a claim against Overton, but the King County Prosecutor’s Office decided against filing a third-degree rape charge because of questions about her account and conflicting statements from the girl’s friend and two other men who were in the room.
Overton told police the girl who filed the claim never said “no” to any sex acts.
Overton has remained on the team during the investigation and coach Lorenzo Romar and the team have declined to talk in detail about the investigation.
The incident occurred shortly after the Huskies beat Oregon State 103-72. Overton had one of his better games of the season that night, tallying eight points and a seven assists.
He was a starter because Abdul Gaddy suffered a season-ending knee injury on Jan. 4.
Overton started the next game following at Stanford and Washington lost 58-56.
He’s blamed his struggles this season on myriad of injuries.
Before the season, he pulled his left hamstring and missed most of training camp and the exhibition opener.
Late in the Nov. 16 game against Eastern Washington, he took a hard spill and bruised his tail bone.
Overton also hyperextended his left knee Dec. 20 in practice and missed the Nevada game, snapping a streak of 114 consecutive games played.
He’s averaging 6.0 points 3.4 assists and 2.6 rebounds.
Romar is expected to meet with media at 2 p.m.
