Jeff Faraudo at the Oakland Tribune organized his annual Pac-10 Basketball Writers survey and published the results today.
The writers mirrored the coaches who voted Arizona’s Derrick Williams and Sean Miller the Player of the Year and Coach of the Year respectively.
I was on of 27 writers who participated. Here’s what I e-mailed Faraudo.
Who is your choice for Pac-10 Player of the Year and why?
— Derrick Williams. Best player on the best team.
Name your five-man all-Pac-10 team (roughly by position: in other words, don’t give us four power forwards or five point guards.
— Williams, Klay Thompson, Isaiah Thomas, Nikola Vucevic and Reeves Nelson.
Who is the league’s most underrated player? Why?
— Joevan Catron. Oregon wasn’t highly touted before the season. He had an amazing year.
The most overrated? Why?
— Tyler Honeycutt. Several mock drafts say he’s a NBA first-round draft pick and maybe a lottery pick. In the Pac-10 season, he’s only shown glimpses of his potential.
Which Pac-10 player is most fun to watch? Why?
— Jorge Gutierrez. Always active. Always engaged. Gives everything he has on both ends of the court. If he improves his jumper, he’ll be really good next season.
Who will eventually be the best NBA player?
Who deserves Pac-10 Coach of the Year and why?
— Tight race between Arizona’s Sean Miller, Cal’s Mike Montgomery and Oregon’s Dana Altman. I choose Montgomery. He’s done more with less. Ten wins in the conference is amazing considering he lost four starters.
You have one game to play and one week to prepare. Who do you want as coach?
— Ben Howland.
Which team was the biggest surprise?
— Oregon. The Ducks started slowly, but midway through the conference season they were playing as well as anyone in the league. Once Altman gets players who fit his system, Oregon is going to be pretty good.
The biggest disappointment?
Given how Oregon decorated the playing surface at the new Matthew Knight Arena, what design should UCLA feature on its floor after Pauley Pavilion is renovated next season? Please explain.
— I have no clue.
Can any team, aside from Arizona, UCLA or Washington, win the Pac-10 tournament? If so, which one?
— Washington State only if Klay Thompson and Reggie Moore returns. If not, then California.
Will either Utah or Colorado finish in the upper division of the Pac-12 standings next season?
Which team will win the 2012 Pac-12 title?
