Arizona game thread

IT’S OVER — UW 77-75.
GREAT SAVES — Ross or Holiday tracked down a long jumper in the corner and Thomas forced a turnover.
BRYAN-AMANING FOULS OUT — Bryan-Amaning collected his fifth foul. He’s been disqualified. The officials were unsure who the foul was on, but they can’t go to the monitors. UW 73-72, 3:06.
FAST START — Ross and Wilcox knocked down big shots. UW 73-70, 3:22.
OVERTIME — Of course. Overtime. Only. This. Game. UW 68-68.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? — Wilcox drained a three-pointer to tie the game. UW 68-68, 5.7.
DOWN ONE — Thomas sank a big three-pointer. UA 63-62, 32.7.
DOUBLE BONUS — Arizona will take two free throws on every foul. UA 63, 59, 1:47.
WILLIAMS AT THE LINE — Williams at the line with a chance to give Arizona the lead. UW 59-58, 2:56.
HERE WE GO — It’s getting good now. This place is nuts. Who said LA is bad environment for the tournament. The Huskies just missed three straight three-pointers. Arizona has the ball. UW 59-58, 3:30.
THOMAS TAKING OVER — Thomas is driving again and Arizona can’t stop him. He’s scored on two acrobatic layups. UW 59-55, 6:18.
FOUR ON MBA — Bryan-Amaning is out with four fouls. N’Diaye is in. uW 57-55, 6:43.
WASHINGTON TIMEOUT — The Huskies missed the front end of one-and-one FT attempts which could come back to haunt them. UW 55-52, 8:33.
WHY ARE THEY PANICKING? — Steve Kelley made a great point. He said: “Arizona is playing like there’s three minutes left?” UW 53-49, 9:48.
BIG REBOUND — Romar and the assistants have been on Gant to rebound and the junior collected a huge rebound off of a MBA miss. He scored on the putback despite being fouled. He’s going to the line. UW 50-46, 11:53.
IT’S WILLIAMS OR BUST — Arizona’s offense is grinded to a near halt. If Williams doesn’t score or shoot, then everyone else is throwing up prayers.
FEELING LIKE MARCH — The game is tense. Every possession is meaningful. Wilcox had a good look at a three-pointer and if the shot had gone down, it would have blown the roof off this building. The intensity is incredible. The UW assistants are into every possession. They’re coaching like crazy. Romar is remaining calm. UW 46-46, 13:08.
GETTING HEATED — The crowd is into it now.
SWEET REVENGE — Gant emphatically rejected Williams short jumper. UW 46-45, 13:56.
MEDIA TIMEOUT — Momentum has swung back to UW’s side. The Huskies are on a 7-2 run and have scored four straight points. In game like this, two consecutive baskets counts for a spurt. UW 42-42, 15:34.
TIE GAME — Wilcox tied the game with a hard drive for a layup. UW 42-42, 16:35.
THREE ON MBA — Bryan-Amaning has three fouls. He’s staying in. UA 42-40, 17:17.
THREE ON HOLIDAY — Holiday has three fouls. He’s staying in. UA 40-33, 18:57.
SECOND HALF — Same starters for both teams.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — Thomas keeps looking over to the bench at Romar. It’s as if he’s asking the coach if this is the night he gets to go for 40. There’s been some amazing performances in college basketball recently. Harrison Barnes went for 40-something today. Jimmer Fredette had 52 the other day. Klay Thompson also had 43.
Thomas looks as if he’s on his way to a similar game. He has 19 points, which is the most in a half this season for a Husky, He’s connected on 6 for 9 from the field and 3 of 4 three-pointers. He would have more than one assist, but no one else can make shots. And never mind those three turnovers because Thomas is trying to create for others and sometimes things go awry.
Three starters (Bryan-Amaning, Holiday and Wilcox) are scoreless. The only other Husky giving anything offensively is Suggs, who has a three-pointer and five points.
Washington’s defense is keeping it in the game. The Huskies have contained Williams, who has seven points. The 2-3 zone is forcing Arizona to take three-pointers and it is 4 of 11 behind the arc. The Huskies are also wining the battle of the rebounds. They have 17, Arizona 13.
The free throw issue is glaring. Washington is 4 of 4 at the line and Arizona is 6 of 11. The Wildcats have committed three fouls. Wow. That’s amazing. UW has 10 fouls. Are we in Tucson, Ariz.?
Thomas may have to win this game for the Huskies. He’ll have the green light.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.
HALFTIME — UA 36-33.
WOW — Thomas is having an amazing game. He picked Jones clean in the open court and was fouled on the layup.
MADAME SECRETARY — Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice is back and she’s sitting courtside. UA 32-29, 2:23.
LOOKED LIKE GOALTEND — No surprise there’s a questionable goaltend call in this game. This time it involved Thomas who had a breakaway layup, but two Wildcats blocked it. It appeared as if the ball was either coming down or it hit the glass before the block. The refs thought differently. UA 32-26, 3:28.
DANGER TIME — Romar smartly called timeout after Arizona scored seven straight points. The Wildcats scored on a short jumper, a dunk from Williams and a three-pointer. On the other end, UW missed two three-pointers. US 32-24, 4:52.
CROWD CONTROL — It’s a pro-Arizona crowd today. UW 21-21, 7:38.
MEDIA TIMEOUT — Thomas is having a special game. He’s killing the Cats on dribble drive and fantastic finishes at the rim. Thomas is 4 of 5 for a game-high nine points. Suggs has five points. Everyone else is rather quiet offensively. UA 21-19, 7:38.
AND JUST LIKE THAT — Williams picks up Arizona’s first foul at 9:23.
FOUL DISPARITY — Washington has 7 fouls, Arizona 0. UA 19-17, 9:35.
GOING ZONE — The Huskies have fallen into a 2-3 zone. They forced an errant three-pointer on the first possession. Suggs hit a three-pointer. UW 17-17, 10:51.
MEDIA TIMEOUT — Romar is screaming at the Huskies on the bench to take care of the ball. He’s coaching Gant on a his play. He’s not happy about something. Not sure. Gant is nodding is agreement. UA 17_14, 11:54.
TWO ON MBA — Bryan-Amaning is on the bench with two fouls. N’Diaye is in. UA 17-14, 12:54.
PRETTY GOOD BASKETBALL — We’re seeing high-level stuff here. I thought this game would be ugly, but I was totally wrong. When these teams play, the game flows. They bring out the best in each other. UA 15-12, 13:30.
TOUGHNESS — Romar yelled: “Toughness.” He’s going with a smaller lineup and he needs the Huskies to play physical against Arizona’s big front line of Hill, Jesse Perry and Williams. UW is countering with Gant, Ross and Bryan-Amaning. UA 6-5, 15:59.
FIRST SUBS — Darnell Gant and Scott Suggs are in for Holiday and Ross. UA 6-5, 16:12.
ARIZONA TIMEOUT — Wildcats coach Sean Miller isn’t liking what he’s seeing from the UA offense so he called timeout. UW 3-2, 17:31.
MBA vs. WILLIAMS — Williams threw out of the post when he got the ball and he blocked Bryan-Amaning’s layup. Still no score at 18:48.
MISSED THE MEMO — Assistant Jim Shaw is the only person on the UW bench not in black. He’s wearing a daper beige suit.
STARTING LINEUPS: Same starters for UW: Ross, Thomas, Holiday, Matthew Bryan-Amaning and C.J. Wilcox.
Arizona: G Lamont Jones, G Kyle Fogg, F Jesse Perry, F Derrick Williams and F Solomon Hill.
OFFENSE VS. DEFENSE — Do you like the offense that freshman guard Terrence Ross provides or the defense of 7-foot center Aziz N’Diaye? With fewer than 24 hours to prepare for this game, Romar will likely stay with the same starters and keep Ross in the starting lineup. The Huskies need his scoring. However, N’Diaye was recruited for these types of games.
PICTURE THIS — When I walked to Staples Center, I saw coach Lorenzo Romar outside posing for a picture with a man wearing a blue Arizona t-shirt. I immediately thought about USC coach Kevin O’Neill. Romar also spent some time chatting with his daughter and her friends, who are UW cheerleaders.
HERE COME THE HUSKIES — Isaiah Thomas, Terrence Ross and Antoine Hosley were the first to walk on the floor for UW. Justin Holiday was next.
ON TV — CBS has the game. Gus Johnson is the play-by-play man and Bob Wenzel is the analyst.
DRESSED IN BLACK — The Huskies are wearing black today.
CLOCK HAS STARTED — The 60-minute clock has started and Arizona is on the court for warm ups.
