Utah hires Krystkowiak; top players consider transferring

After a three-week coaching search, Utah hired Larry Krystkowiak and not everyone is happy with the 6-foot-9 newcomer affectionately known as Coach K Jr.
One fan site questioned his lack of college head coaching experience. Krystkowiak spent two years at Montana and guided the Grizzlies to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances. The bulk of his coaching experience is in the NBA. He was a head coach at Milwaukee and spent this season as a New Jersey Nets assistant.
“I need to find 15 guys, 13 on scholarship, that are willing to make some sacrifices,” Krystkowiak was quoted in the Deseret News. “If they bring that passion and commitment, I’m confident we can get to a place we’re all very proud of.”
Junior guard/forward Will Clyburn, Utah’s leading scorer and rebounder in the 2010-2011 season, told the Utah student newspaper he is considering sitting out next season.
Junior guard Josh Watkins and freshman guard J.J. O’Brien are also reportedly considering transferring. They were the second and fifth leading scorers last season.
Krystkowiak, 46, signed a five-year deal worth $950,000 a year. He inherits a team that was 13-18 last season and 6-10 in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes dropped seven straight games midway through last season and finished and the season losing eight of their last 11 games.
Utah will likely be picked to finish near the bottom of the Pac-12 next season.
