National Signing Day; UW team awards banquet tonight

The regular signing period for basketball begins today and ends May 18.
Washington isn’t expected to announce any signees today, but coach Lorenzo Romar is scheduled to appear on an ESPNU two-hour National Signing Day Special that begins at 11 a.m. (PST).
Meanwhile the Huskies will put a bow on the 2010-11 season at the UW awards banquet 6 p.m. tonight. The event is open to the public and admission is $60.
Washington will give out 11 awards and say goodbye to seniors Justin Holiday, Matthew Bryan-Amaning, Venoy Overton and junior Isaiah Thomas who declared for the NBA draft.
Replacing the quartet will be difficult for the Huskies. They have 11 scholarship players on the roster, which is two fewer than the NCAA Division I limit of 13.
Romar said he’s looking to add at least one big man and there appears to be several candidates.
Kevin Davis, a 6-foot-9 forward at Tacoma Community College, has a scholarship offer from UW, but needs to fulfill academic requirements.
God’s Gift Achiuwa, a 6-8 forward at Erie (N.Y.) Community College, will reportedly visit UW on Friday. Several schools including St. John’s and Kentucky are on his final list.
Daouda Soumaoro, a 6-9 high school forward in New York, is reportedly considering the Huskies. St. John’s, Colorado and Utah are also said to be in the running.
Richard Peters, a 6-10 Canadian high school center, decommitted from Oklahoma and has reportedly expressed interest in UW. He wasn’t expected to attend any college until 2012, but was scheduled to take the ACT last week in hopes of earning a qualifying score to enroll in the fall. Arizona and Georgia are believed to be recruiting Peters.
