Video: Nice catch coach

Washington coaches Lorenzo Romar and Steve Sarkisian stopped by Pike Place Market this afternoon and a large crowd gathered around the downtown fish stand to watch the show.
Both men appeared apprehensive when they stepped behind the counter and the crowd began to cheer. They received a tutorial and watched the pros at work. Sarkisian even took a practice throw.
Then it was time to apply the lessons learned.
Sarkisian went first. The football coach looked nervous before snagging a high fastball salmon that had some steam on it.
Next up: Romar. He exuded a bit of swagger as he loosened up for the catch. Someone asked him to use one hand and the coach obliged. He snagged an arcing 16-pounder with one hand as the crowd cheered and began barking.
Both men then posed with Washington coaches and signed autographs for fans.
“Seeing it done on television before, I thought it might be fun if someone else was doing it, but I didn’t think I’d ever do it,” Romar said. “There were some very good coaches. Those guys back there were good coaches. They explained (how to use) your fingertips. They said don’t grab it this way. So I was coachable and I had a great passer. It was right there. I had to be able to catch it.
“It was fun. They have a lot of energy back there. Those guys back there are pretty excited so they make it an exciting situation.”
Romar said he didn’t intentionally try to show up Sarkisian with the one-hand grab.
“I think it’s more nerve-wracking going first,” Romar said. “I’m much better when I can watch and see how it’s done and then go try and do it.
“I had the luxury of watching him catch it. I had a great passer. I listened to what they said. That’s what it was.”
After 11 years in Seattle (nine as UW coach, two as a Husky guard), it was Romar’s first time behind the famous fish counter.
“Well you don’t just walk up and say hey throw me a fish,” he said laughing. “You have to be invited and I was invited today.”
