Alex Wegner, who starred at Vashon Island High, joined Washington and will walk on for the 2011-12 season, the school announced this morning.
“We are looking forward to Alex joining us,” coach Lorenzo Romar said in a statement released by UW. “He is a very good student, proven winner and hard worker.”
Wegner, 6-foot-7, 190-pound guard/forward, averaged 22.9 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.8 steals and 2.4 blocks per game as a senior. He was a co-captain, carried a 3.3 grade-point average and received the Most Inspirational award from teammates for the second time last season.
He helped Vashon Island to the 1A state tournament the past four seasons, including a 2009 title and a third-place finish in 2010.
As a senior, Wegner was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and selected to the Associated Press 1A all-state team. He holds the school record for most points in a single game (38) and most points in a season (596).
Wegner has been described as an avid Husky fan. He’s the fourth person in his immediate family to attend Washington. His parents Derek and Glenna and sister Morgan graduated from UW.
Wegner, an incoming freshman, increases the roster to 15 players including 13 on scholarship and two walk-ons.
