Portland live game thread

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM — Florida Atlantic’s Greg Gantt, Georgia State’s Eric Buckner, Portland Nemanja Mitrovic, UW’s Terrence Ross, UW’s Abdul Gaddy and MVP C.J. Wilcox.
THAT’S IT — UW wins 93-63.
CROWD GOES WILD — Brendan Sherrer is in and he drew a big ovation after hitting two FTs. UW 88:58, 2:46.
FANS LEAVING — Some fans have had enough of a good thing and they’re making the way to the exits. UW 72-44, 7:49.
SUBS WILL TAKE OVER SOON — The Huskies are firmly in control. Portland makes a run or two, but Washington has an answer. In a few minutes, Romar will empty the bench. UW 69-44. 8:34..
HEART TO HEART — During the timeout, Romar pulled Wroten aside on the court and made sure get a point across. Not sure what was said, but Romar was animated. UW 64-35. 12:28.
SHOWTIME — The Huskies are feeling it now. Gant stuffs a breakaway jam. Wroten slices the defense with pass inside to N’Diaye for another dunk. The highlights are coming fast and furious. UW 57-29, 14:08.
ANOTHER HIGHLIGHT — Ross collected a loose ball and toss the ball ahead to Wroten who led a fast break. Wroten could have scored easily, but he threw the ball at the rim where Ross flushed a windmill jam. UW 51-26, 15:57.
TOURNAMENT BALLOTS — Just submitted my all-tournament ballot. My votes: Wilcox – MVP. Gaddy, Ross, Mitrovic – Portland, Gantt – FAU and Buckner – Georgia State. Seems a little early to submit a ballot, but that’s what the tourney organizers wanted.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — With the exception of the free throw shooting, it was an amazing first half for the Huskies. They dominated every aspect of the game. Ross looks very comfortable while draining three three-pointers en route to a game-high 13 points. He’s weaving the ball between his legs to create space and knocking down open jumpers. Ross is also working overtime on the defensive end where he’s held Mitrovic to 2-for-6 shooting and five points. It’s no easy task because Mitrovic uses a lot of screens and he’s constantly moving.
Gaddy is UW’s other early star. He has 10 points and four rebounds. Wroten is playing solid defense. He’s harassing the Portland guards and making life miserable. He’s also attacking the rim and has six points. Wilcox drained two threes for six points. Gant is 3 for 4 for six points.
This is the best half the Huskies have had in this short season.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.
HALFTIME — UW 43-23.

JUST ONE QUIBBLE — Fantastic start for the Huskies. Everything is working well. Okay not everything. They’re shooting 16.7 percent (1 for 6) on FTs. Wroten is 0 for 5. Obviously not good. UW 32-21, 3:56.
RETURN THE FAVOR — About a minute later, Wroten led a fast break and threw the ball ahead to Gaddy who converted the layup after a foul. He sank the ensuing free throw. UW 32-18, 5:01.
HIGHLIGHT — Finally Gaddy and Wroten connect in a big way. Gaddy spotted Wroten cutting along the baseline and lofted a pass at the rim. Wroten went after it and flushed a dunk despite being fouled. UW 29-16, 5:41
SIXTH SUB — Martin Breunig is in.
ROSS — Ross is using his cross-over and step-back move to find range for his jumper. He’s done it twice for a three-pointer and a long jumper. UW 24-16, 6:45.
LOOKOUT! — N’Diaye lept over 6-5 Tony Kimbro beneath the rim while trying to block a shot. Good for Kimbro he ducked and the 7-footer sailed over him. UW 21-13,8:19.
FOURTH SUB — Hikeem Stewart subs in for Ross. UW 21-12.
GOOD ENERGY — The Huskies appear more upbeat than Sunday’s game. Romar is shuffling players in and out at a quick rate with the exception of Wroten. UW 21-12, 9:16.
NICE JOB ROSS — Ross has held Mitrovic to 1-for-4 shooting.
GET ON THE FLOOR — Wroten did a nice job forcing a loose ball and saving it from going out of bounds, while Simmons dove to keep it alive. Goes to show the hustle of both guys. Wroten used his quick hands and quick feet while Simmons just went all out and hit the floor. UW 21-8, 11:01.
VERY HOT START — Kemp and Wroten collaborated for a highlight. Kemp blocked Tyler Gamble’s shot to start a fast break. Wroten dribbled hard down court and faked a defender with a pass before converting a layup. This game is getting out of hand already. UW 21-8, 11:28.
THIRD SUB — Desmond Simmons is in for Wilcox.
SECOND SUB — Shawn Kemp Jr. is in for N’Diaye. UW 14-6, 14:44.
GOING ZONE — Portland came out in a 2-3 zone, but Gant scored a short jumper. UW 14-6, 14:47.
HOT START — The Huskies have connected on 6 of 9 shots. Gant is very active early on. He’s being aggressive looking for his shot and not just passing when he gets it. He’s sank two mid-range jumpers. Gaddy also knows he has a size advantage and he’s bulled into the paint for two baskets. UW 12-6, 15:32.
FIRST SUB — Tony Wroten Jr. subs for Ross. UW 10:4, 16:34.
UW STRIKES FIRST — Gaddy got in the scoring column first with a putback followed by Gant who sank a mid-range jumper. UW 4-2, 18:19.
BE CAREFUL SCOTT — After pre-game introductions the Huskies gather in a group, chant and jump up and down. It was funny to see Scott Suggs join the group. He was jumping on one leg, protecting his surgically-repaired toe.
STARTERS — No change for Washington: G Abdul Gaddy, G C.J. Wilcox, C Aziz N’Diaye, F Darnell Gant and F Terrence Ross.
Portland: F Ryan Nicholas, C Riley Barker, G Nemanja Mitrovic, G David Carr, G Tim Douglas.
EMPTY SEATS — Can’t really say it’s a late-arriving crowd because there’s still about 30 minutes before tip off. Still, it’s practically empty in here. Maybe the parking situation is adversely affecting the crowd’s arrival.
300 — Tonight’s game is No. 300 for coach Lorenzo Romar at Washington. He has a 197-102 record in 10 years. He trails Hec Edmundson (488-195) and his former coach Marv Harshman (246-146) on UW’s all-time coaching win list.
ON TV — Tonight’s game is being televised by ROOT Sports. Kevin Calabro, Lenny Wilkens and Jen Meuller have the call.
OWLS FLYING HIGH — Florida Atlantic beat Georgia State 84-77 in today’s first game of the World Vision Classic.
