UCLA suspends Reeves Nelson; Utah boots Josh Watkins

What in the world is going on in the Pac-12 this season?
It’s one thing to fall out of the national rankings due to poor play on the court. However, It’s alarming when off-court issues are becoming a daily headline.
UCLA offers the latest.
Coach Ben Howland suspended troublesome Reeves Nelson again.
Last month the 6-8 junior forward sat out one game for for insubordinate behavior. Once reinstated he missed a team bus and needed to fly separately on a flight to Hawaii when UCLA played in the Maui Classic. He was benched in the first half of the next game.
Nelson, UCLA’s leading scorer and rebounder last season, never made it back to the starting lineup and continued to be a problem on the bench where his minutes declined.
Howland had enough of his antics and suspended him indefinitely Tuesday morning for conduct unbecoming a member of the UCLA basketball team.
There is no specific timetable for the reevaluation of Nelson’s status with the team, according to a statement released by UCLA.
“This continues a trend of very disappointing behavior by Reeves,” Howland said in a statement. “I personally have worked hard with him to illustrate the importance of the code of conduct for our student-athletes, as well as the ramifications for violating it. I am disappointed that he has continued to fall short of my expectations.”
UCLA began the season without Jerime Anderson who was suspended from the opener. The punishment stemmed from a off-season arrest in which the senior guard pled guilty to misdemeanor charges of lost property and trespass.
The Bruins are 2-5, the worst start under Howland.
On Monday, Utah suspended leading scorer Josh ‘Jiggy’ Watkins because he struggles with showing up at places on time.
Coach Larry Krystkowiak had enough of the tardiness issue when Watkins, the team’s only healthy senior, arrived late to a 7:45 a.m. practice.
He also had other issues such as reporting to fall training camp 30 pounds overweight. Still, he’s been the only one keeping the Utes from completely capsizing. Watkins averages 17.7 points per game, which ranks second in the conference.
Utah is 1-6, the worst start in the history of the program.
Other Pac-12 schools with off-court issues.
California suspended sophomore Richard Solomon, the team’s leading rebounder.
— Arizona freshman Sidiki Johnson left the team and intends to transfer.
Oregon lost freshmen guards Jabari Brown and Bruce Barron who quit the team and decided to transfer.
— Arizona State freshman Jahii Carson has not been ruled eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
