UC Santa Barbara live game thread

IT’S OVER — UW 87-80.
DOUBLE BONUS — The Gauchos will shoot two free throws on every foul. Wroten is out and Simmons is in. UW 82-77, 43.6.
WROTEN GIVES AND GIVES — Wroten committed a pair of costly turnovers that led to layups. The Gauchos have an 8-0 run. UW 77-75, 3:43.
WROTEN TAKES A SEAT — Wroten made two free throws before coming out. He has 27. UW 68-63, 8:05.
CAREER HIGH — Wroten sank a three-pointer. He has a career-high 25 points. UW 63-60, 8:53.
MORE SUBS — Hikeem Stewart checks in. UW 60-57, 9:36.
IT NEVER GETS OLD — Coming out of timeout, Wroten and Ross connect on a alley-oop 180-degree dunk on Johnson. The Huskies ran this play on Marquette for similar results. UW 58-57, 11:15.
DOMINATING THE BALL — Wroten has 19 shots. Wilcox had four shots and Ross six. Not sure if you want your point guard taking 19 shots. Granted many of those are putbacks, but UW has just five assists. UCSB 57-56, 12:07.
FOUR ON WILCOX — Wilcox picked up his fourth foul trying to stop Johnson. UCSB 57-56, 12:27.
LET’S GET PHYSICAL — Wroten scored on a layup after being fouled by Somogyi. He sank the free throw. UW 56-56, 13:46.
HERE COMES THE BIG MAN — Somogyi is in. So is Kemp. UCSB 56-53, 14:13.
FANTASTIC FRESHMAN — Wroten has a game-high 19 points in 22 minutes. Wow.
ROMAR IS HOT — Romar is hopping mad after officials failed to call on foul when Simmons looked as if he was being held and prevented from catching a Wroten pass that sailed out of bounds. Romar argued the call for two possessions. UW 53-51, 15:54.
ENERGIZER BUNNY — Wroten faked a defender with a pass before flushing left-hand dunk. The crowd went crazy. UW 53-51, 16:38.
MOMENTUM CHANGING? — The crowd is into it now. Wroten scored on a putback to tie the score. UW 51-51, 17:21.
SECOND HALF — Same starters. Wroten scored on a layup. UCSB 47-46, 19:28.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — Entertaining first half. The UW point guards are leading the way for the Huskies. Wroten has 13 points on 6-for-14 shooting and Gaddy 12 on 4-for-4 shooting, including two three-pointers. Ross and Wilcox have just seven points combined. Simmons has chipped in seven points and three rebounds.
But scoring isn’t the problem for the Huskies. They’ve allowed UCSB to shoot 55.6 percent from the field. The Huskies are also 5 of 11 at the free throw line.
Johnson (12 points) is going to get his points, but Somogyi (seven points and five rebounds) is hurting UW inside. The Gauchos are winning the rebound battle 22-14. They also have five blocks, UW none.
Washington has just two turnoves, which is amazing because the game is being played at a high pace.
Romar has used an 8-man rotation and given Breunig and Kemp quality minutes. The Huskies need Wilcox and Ross to find their shots and they have to find a way to slow down the Gauchos in the middle.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.

WOW — Wroten flushed a putback dunk that got the crowd to its feet. UCSB 45-41.
PRESS BREAKER — The Gauchos are beating UW’s press with good passing that’s creating layups.
WHO’S YOUR GADDY — Gaddy just dropped another three-pointer. He has 10 points. UCSB 40-36, 2:27.
POOR FT SHOOTING — UW is 2 of 7 at the line. If the Huskies make their foul shots, they would have the lead. UCSB 36-33, 3:20
HE DID IT AGAIN — Wroten scored again on the big fella with a nifty reverse layup. He’s got a game-high 10 points. UW 31-31, 4:50.
FEARLESS — Wroten took a layup at Somogyi and scored despite being fouled. He missed the free throw. UW 29-29.
MOVE YOUR FEET — The Gauchos drew Kemp into a high pick-n-roll and he bear hugged the point guard. Got to have a better response. On the other end, Wroten found Kemp with a nice pass underneath the basket and he drew a foul. UCSB 29-27, 6:11.
MISSING N’DIAYE — The Huskies are looking for production in the middle. They’ve thrown the ball into Kemp twice and he drew a foul. UW is being outrebounded 13-7. Wroten has six rebounds, but many of those are on his misses. He’s 3 of 9 from the floor. Wilcox has five rebounds and Simmons seven. UCSB 29-24, 7:28.
KEMP JR. — Shawn Kemp Jr. enters the game. Somogyi sits down.
HIGHLIGHT — Johnson tossed a nice lob pass to Somogyi who flushed a jam over Breunig. The big guy has seven points. He normally plays 12 minutes, but I think he’ll play more tonight because UW has no one who can defend him. He’s dominating in the paint. UCSB 27-21, 8:59.
BIG ASSIGNMENT — Breunig is defending 7-3 center Greg Somogyi. UW 14-12, 12:12.
ZONE BUSTER — The Gauchos went to a 2-3 zone and Gaddy sank a three-pointer from the wing. On the other end, Breunig drew an offensive foul. That’s the third charge the Huskies have taken. UW 12-10, 13:38.
FIRST SUBS — Martin Breunig and Desmond Simmons check in for Gant and Wroten. Gaddy missed his free throw. UCSB 10-9, 14:31.
NICE MOVE — Gaddy muscled his way into the hole and sank a layup despite being fouled. He can do that anytime he wants. Needs to be more aggressive. He’ll shoot a free throw after the media timeout. UCSB 10-9, 14:46.
OLE — Wroten has beaten a couple of times on dribble drives. The Huskies are switching everything, which is helping them. But they have to communicate. UCSB 8-4, 15:32.
CAUGHT NAPPING — Johnson drew a foul on Wilcox on an inbound pass beneath the basket. Gant missed the pass. Johnson hit both shots. UCSB 2-0, 18:49.
OFFENSIVE FOUL — Johnson picked up an offensive foul on the first possession. Wilcox provided the defense and Gaddy drew the charge.
NBA SCOUTS IN THE HOUSE — I count about 6-7 NBA scouts I remember from my days on the beat.
WROTEN NONCHALANT — Wroten heard his name announced in the starting lineup for the first time in his career and he showed no little emotion. He exchanged a handshake with Andrew Andrews and did a salute with Gaddy. Otherwise just stone face, which was a good look.
FILLING UP — Starting lineups are being announced and the crowd is starting to thicken. It’s about time.
STARTING LINEUPS — It’s the first change in the lineup for UW this season due to N’Diaye’s injury. UW is employing a four-guard attack that includes: G Abdul Gaddy, G C.J. Wilcox, G Terrence Ross, G Tony Wroten Jr. and F Darnell Gant.
UCSB: F Jaime Serna, G/F James Nunnally, G Orlando Johnson, G Christian Peterson and G Nate Garth.
WROTEN STARTS — Tony Wroten Jr. will make his first career start tonight.
ON TV — ROOT Sports is covering the game. Kevin Calabro, Francis Williams and Jen Mueller are on the mike. Not sure about online options. I’m sure folks are wondering so if you’re pirating a a link pass it along.
WHERE YOU AT? — We’re about 25 minutes away from tipoff and the only people here are those who are working, the UW band and a few folks in the Dawg Pack.
N’DIAYE OUT — Coach Lorenzo Romar was hoping center Aziz N’Diaye (sprained right knee) might be available, but the big man is sitting in dress clothes in the front row stands.
BACK TO THE BASICS — We’re going back to the game thread folks. The live chat is really a two-man operation and I’m flying solo. Will try to update as much as I can.
