Arizona State’s Ruslan Pateev suspended for sucker punch

The Pac-12 announced Arizona State junior center Ruslan Pateev has been suspended one game because he hit an opposing player in the back of the head during an altercation in Monday’s game against Southern Mississippi.
Following the sucker punch, Pateev was ejected and assessed a Flagrant 2 Technical Foul for fighting. Per NCAA Basketball Playing Rules, he will sit out Arizona State’s next game, which is Wednesday against Fresno State.
If he receives another Flagrant 2 Technical Foul for fighting, he will be suspended for the remainder of the season.
“In addition to not adhering to the Conference rules, Mr. Pateev’s actions were a clear violation of the NCAA Playing Rules and he is being appropriately penalized by serving a one-game suspension,” Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement released by the conference. ”
The incident occurred with 12:16 remaining in the second half of Southern Mississippi’s 64-61 win at Wells Fargo Arena. While battling for position, Golden Eagles forward Torye Pelham landed a cheap shot on Pateev, who retaliated with a blow to the back of the head. Pelham charged after Pateev, but was restrained.
Unlike the Xavier-Cincinnati melee last week, coaches, players and officials did a good job preventing the skirmish from escalating into a bench-clearing brawl.
