IT’S OVER — UW 76-60.
HEADING HOME — Some fans are leaving. UW 76-57, 1:36.
SMART PLAY — With the shot clock winding down, Gaddy pumped faked Carlos Emory and got him in the air. Then he jumped in to draw a foul. He made one of three free throws. UW 71-57, 4:05.
HOCKEY LINE CHANGE — Altman substituted four players. He’s looking for a spark. Oregon is pressing in the back court. It’s not working. UW 67-51, 6:49.
WILCOX TAKES OVER — Just when things looked grim, Wilcox drained consecutive three-pointers for the Huskies. He has five three-pointers and 15 points. UW 54-46, 11:27.
SHIFT IN MOMENTUM — Washington led 47-36 at the time of the altercation. Three minutes later, UW is ahead 48-44 with 13:02 left. Romar called a timeout to halt Oregon’s momentum.
A WORD ON GANT — Got to say I liked how Gant ran to the aid of Wroten while he was beefing with Wroten. That’s what a captain does. It was the best leadership I’ve seen from him this season. UW 48-40, 13:50.
SO WHAT HAPPENED? — According to ESPN2, officials issued technicals because they couldn’t determine from the video if the contact was intentional. They did however, hear what was said between Gant and Oshaolu. UW 47-38, 15:14.
DAGGER — Gaddy drained an open three-pointer. UW 64-49, 7:59.
TECHNICALS — Ashaolu and Gant were given technical fouls. Weird. That’s Gant’s second foul. Ashaolu also has two fouls.
ROMAR NOT PLEASED — Officials are talking to both coaches. Romar doesn’t like it.
RIVALRY — Wroten and Ashaolu got tangled and hooked elbows. Wroten fell during the altercation and got up very heated. Both players exchanged harsh words and Gant jumped in the middle of the fray. Replays reveal Wroten elbowed Ashaolu and the refs are looking at the play. Looks like incidental contact to me. UW 47-36, 15:50.
N’DIAYE DOMINATING — N’Diaye only has six points and five rebounds, but he’s controlling the middle. It’s not so much how many stats he has, his presence keeps the Ducks out of the middle. When there’s a loose ball inside, he’s swallowing it up. UW 45-36, 16:52.
CIRCUS — Ross converted a wild, throw-it-at-the rim shot. UW 43-33, 17:54.
FOUL TROUBLE — Ross picked up his third foul. UW 41-30, 19:14.
SECOND HALF — Wilcox is starting for Gaddy, who has three fouls. Same starters for Oregon.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — Washington is killing Oregon on points off of turnovers (12-2) and fast break points (9-0). The Ducks are staying in the game because they’ve outscored the Huskies 10-2 on second-chance points. And Singler has helped their cause. He has a game-high 13 points.
Wroten leads Washington with 11. It’s been a relatively quiet game for him. Still he has three assists, two steals and two turnovers. Wilcox (nine points) and N’Diaye (six points and three rebounds) have been the other stars for UW.
The Huskies are controlling the game with their defense. They’ve held the Ducks to 32.4 percent shooting and 2-14 shooting on three-pointers. That’s outstanding. Gaddy and Wroten are denying penetration and Oregon’s best offense is throwing it on the glass and scoring on the putback. Singler has gotten free a few times, but Simmons isn’t letting him go anymore.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.
HALFTIME — UW 41-30.
FIFTH SUB — Hikeem Stewart is in. Both teams are on a mini-drought. Ross hit a three-pointer for the only points in the last two minutes. UW 39-28, 1:37.
FRUSTRATED — Altman is pushing buttons, but he’s unable to solve the Huskies’ suffocating defense. Washington is making life miserable for the Ducks who are shooting 33.3 percent. Washington has forced nine turnovers for 12 points. UW 36-26, 3:42.
MOMENTUM CHANGING — Simmons stole the ball and gave it to Wilcox for a three-pointer. On the next possession, the Huskies forced another turnover and Wroten blew by Joseph with a cross-over dribble for a fast break layup. UW 36-24, 4:16.
BLOCK PARTY — N’Diaye blocked two shots on the same defensive possession. When the Huskies got the ball, Wroten connected with Gaddy with a no-look pass for a layup. Oregon coach Dana Altman called timeout. UW 28-22, 6:06.
SINGLER HEATING UP — Singler is finding the range. He’s scored the last two baskets for the Ducks. On the last shot, he didn’t hesitate to nail a three-pointer. He has a game-high 11 points. No other Oregon player has more than 5. UW 24-22, 7:32.
UW GOES ZONE — The Huskies switched to a zone and Singler drained a long jumper. UW 24-22, 8:24.
PICKING UP THE PACE — Both teams are going back and forth now. Not a lot of defense being played. Not sure what Joseph was thinking when he tried to press Wroten by himself in the back court. Wroten blew past him and raced in for a layup. UW 21-15, 10:03.
NICE HANDS — Wilcox poked the ball away from Ashaolu and dove on the floor for a loose ball. Really good play. UW 17-11, 11:56.
BULL DOZER — Wroten ran over Singler who tried to set a pick. Singler fell, which forced a turnover and Wroten scored on a fast break dunk. UW 14-9, 13:24.
STRUGGLING AGAINST ZONE — The Huskies are having a difficult time deciphering Oregon’s zone. They managed just one basket – a Gaddy three-pointer – in four possessions. UW 7-7, 15:35.
KINGMA GOES IN — Brett Kingma, the younger brother of UW player Kristi, is in the game for Oregon. UW 7-7, 15:50.
FIRST SUBS — C.J. Wilcox and Desmond Simmons are in for Ross and Gant. UW 7-7, 16:34.
TWO ON ROSS — Ross picked up his second foul. Not good. UW 4-4, 17:46.
NICE START — N’Diaye has scored the only points. UW 4-0, , 18:20.
BODY LANGUAGE — A few courtside observers didn’t like the Huskies’ body language during warmups. We’ll see if that means anything.
STARTING LINEUPS — No changes for UW: Abdul Gaddy, Tony Wroten Jr., Terrence Ross, Darnell Gant and Aziz N’Diaye.
Oregon has one change. Center Tony Woods is replaced by F Olu Ashaolu. The other starters include: G Garrett Sim, G Jonathan Loyd, G Devoe Joseph and F E.J. Singler.
EARLY ARRIVALS — Leave it to Oregon to bring out the UW fans. We’re about 18 minutes away from the star and Hec Ed is about half full. I’ve gotten used to the late-arriving crowds. I think UW gets its first sellout tonight.
DUBS??? — Maybe I’m clueless, but I think that’s Dubs the UW mascot on the floor and mingling with court side fans. Not sure I’ve seen him at basketball games before. and not sure if his name is Dubs. For some reason that name is in my head.
ON TV — You can find the game on ESPN2. David Fleming and Sean Farnham have the call. Not sure about online options. Check ESPN3.com.
HAPPY NEW YEAR’S — Who schedules a 7 p.m. game on New Year’s Eve? Seriously. That’s just ridiculous. I understand an afternoon game, but 7 p.m.? Ridiculous. Anyway I’m here. You’re here. Let’s have some fun.
