UCLA live game thread

IT’S OVER — UW 71-69.
ALL THE WAY BACK — UW 68-65.
GREAT GAME — Lamb fouled out. The crowd is in it now. Ross is taking over. UCLA 65-64, 2:49.
TIMEOUT UCLA — Ross drained a mid-range jumper. The place is rocking. Chants of “Go Huskies!” Howland called timeout. UCLA 65-61, 4:38.
DOUBLE BONUS — The Huskies will shoot two free throws on every foul. UCLA 65-59, 5:15.
PHANTOM CALL — Lamb got the benefit of a bail-out call from the refs. He sank both free throws. UCLA 65-55, 6:02.
MAN DOWN — Travis Wear looked as if he sprained his ankle after scoring a layup. The officials stopped play before UW could inbound the ball and fans didn’t like that. UCLA 63-53, 6:40.
FOUR ON N’DIAYE — N’Diaye picked up his fourth foul trying to stop Smith. The big man will shoot free throws when play resumes. UCLA 60-53, 7:51.
NEED A RUN — Wroten is out. Ross is on Jones. UCLA 60-53, 8:28.
JONES TAKING OVER — Jones made three-pointers on consecutive possessions because Wroten got hung up on the screen. Wroten appears tired and slow by some sort of leg injury. He’s got to do a better job of staying with Jones. UCLA 60-53, 9:25.
BONUS TIME — The Huskies will shoot free throws on every foul. UW has three fouls, UCLA 7. The Huskies need to attack the basket. UCLA 54-51, 10:28.
NERVOUS TIME — The crowd feels like it wants to explode, but the players have to give them a reason to cheer. UCLA 51-47, 11:57.
CAREER HIGH — Smith has a personal best 21 points. UCLA 49-47, 12:43.
BACK SCREEN, BACK CUT — Gant set a back screen that freed Ross, who cut to the rim and flushed an alley-oop lob from Gaddy. On the other end, Wroten is gave a little too much attention to Smith and lost track of Anderson who nailed a three-pointer. UCLA 45-44, 14:21.
POOR SHOOTING — N’Diaye made 1 of 2 free throws. He’s 1 of 4 today and has connected on 3 of his last 22. UW 42-40, 15:42.
THREE ON N’DIAYE — N’Diaye picked up his third foul on Smith. He’s staying in the game. On the previous play, Smith ran into the stands trying to keep up with N’Diaye and fell into the crowd. He got up slowly. He’s out of the game. UCLA 40-39, 17:17.
SECOND HALF — Same starters for UW. Smith replaces Travis Wear.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — Romar has to devise a plan to slow down Smith, who has a game-high 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting. The Huskies have switched to zone a few times, but they continued to give up baskets. Smith is dominating and he’s not doing a whole lot. It’s strange. He’s just a load. Nearly unstoppable when he gets it in his sweet spot. The Huskies have to work early in the possession and get him off of his spot. The guards have to harass the Bruins and challenge the entry pass. If Smith is able to set up and get the ball down low, it’s either layup or he’s getting fouled.
David Wear has eight points because he’s being active and moving without the ball. It’s not as if he’s doing anything special or shooting lights out.
Gant is having a fine game. He’s looking for his shot and has sank a couple of step back jumpers near the free throw line. He leads the Huskies with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting. Gaddy is also having a nice game offensively. He has six points on 2-fr-4 shooting.
Not sure what happened to N’Diaye. Yes he has two fouls, but he’s been ineffective since the fast start. He has four points and five rebounds. He’s got to make it his mission to slow down Smith. If you want to get Smith out of the game, attack him offensively and draw fouls.
Washington is shooting 51.7 percent from the field.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.
HALFTIME — UW 35-34. Ross drained a long jumper over Lamb and Wear as time expired.

WHAT HAS GOTTEN INTO GANT? — Really good start from the senior Gant. It’s not just the scoring, but his defense has been solid. He chased down Jones and blocked his layup from behind.
MEDIA TIMEOUT — Smith has a game-high 10 points. He’s a load. When he catches it down low, there’s no stopping him. He’s that big and strong and good. He’s also making his free throws. He’s 3 of 4 at the line. UW 30-30, 3:24.
NICE OVATION — The crowd applauded Kemp as he checked out. ASJ is back in. UW 30-28, 4:42.
NICE BLOCK — Kemp rejected Travis Wear. Kemp is playing a nice game. His best in a long time. UW 28-26, 5:27.
WROTEN GOING TO WORK — Wroten is getting the ball in the low block and he’s overpowering Jones for two baskets. UW 28-24, 6:09.
GOTTA SELL THAT — Ross was nudged out of bounds by Smith, but he’s got to flop on that play to get the call. There was contact, but Ross has to make the official make the call. UW 25-24, 6:29.
MEDIA TIMEOUT — Just one foul on Smith thanks to Gaddy who got him on a blocking call. The big man has eight points. David Wear also has eight points. Everyone else for the Bruins have four. The Huskies need to put pressure on Smith to either tire him out or get him out of the game with fouls. UCLA 22-21, 7:55.
REIGN MAN JR. — Kemp flushed a dunk off of a feed from Wilcox and he looked just like his daddy. UW 21-18, 8:40.
GADDY’S GAME — Gaddy has converted two shots despite contact. He drove to the baseline, got Jones in the air with a fake and sank a short jumper after the foul. When play resumes, he’ll shoot a free throw. UW 18-16, 9:26.
MORE SUBS — N’Diaye picked up his second foul on Smith and Romar turned to Shawn Kemp Jr. Between him, ASJ and N’Diaye that’s 15 fouls. UCLA 16-12, 11:36.
NBA CALL — Normally don’t see a continuation call in college basketball, but Gaddy was fouled on a drive threw up a shot that banked and the refs ruled it good. He made the free throw. UCLA 14-12, 12:02.
THAT WAS QUICK — N’Diaye is back in and ASJ is out after picking up a foul. UCLA 12-9, 13:17.
BIG BOY BATTLE — Austin Seferian-Jenkins is in for N’Diaye and he’s defending Smith. UCLA 10-9, 14:05.
MEDIA TIMEOUT — N’Diaye is dominating early. He’s getting to a lot of rebounds and has made 2 of 3 shots. C.J. Wilcox and UCLA’s Joshua Smith checked in at the scorer’s table and will enter the game when play resumes. UW 6-6, 15:53.
FIRST SUB — Darnell Gant is in for Simmons, who threw up an airball on a mid-range jumper on the previous possession. UW 6-4, 16:32.
IT’S A PARTY ALREADY — Crazy environment at Hec Ed. The good times are starting early. Wroten missed a fast break layup and Ross cleaned up the mess with a putback dunk. Coach Ben Howland called a quick timeout to settle down the troops. UW 6-2, 17:29.
FIRST BASKET — On a broken play, N’Diaye scored on a dribble drive. UW 2-2, 18:30.
GOOD CROWD — Despite the early start, it looks like a sellout. Very loud already and the game hasn’t began.
500 SALUTE — Four members of the ROTC repelled from the rafters and one of them presented Romar a basketball in honor of his 500th game. An 11-year-old kid also played the national anthem on his electric guitar.
WEARING GOLD — The Huskies are wearing their gold uniforms. I’m told of their four, the gold is their least favorite.
DUBS IS BACK — Good to see Dubs, UW’s mascot. Still haven’t figured out why he only appears at certain games. Anyway, he led the Huskies out on the court for pre-game warmups.
STARTING LINEUPS — No change for UW: Aziz N’Diaye, Desmond Simmons, Abdul Gaddy, Tony Wroten Jr. and Terrence Ross.
UCLA: G Tyler Lamb, G Jerime Anderson, G Lazeric Jones, F Travis Wear and F David Wear.
CORRECTION — Actually this is the third game on ESPN.
ON TV — UW is on ESPN for the second time this season. Better start getting used to this. The World Wide leader takes over next season. Dan Pasch and Dan Dakich have the call.
70’s NIGHT — Washington is encouraging fans to participate in a 70’s Night theme. For a second I thought the players might go along with the gag and wear uniforms like they did three decades ago. But that’s crazy. For starters, it’s a financial hardship to outfit the team in a specific gear for just one night. And secondly, there’s no way the guys would wear the short shorts that were in style back then. That’s Steve Hawes (below).
Earlier this week I asked coach Lorenzo Romar if he still had any polyester suits he might dig out of the closet for tonight. We’ll see. The Dawg Pack is decked in a few faux afro wigs, neon and sun glasses.
