Northwestern live game thread

IT’S OVER — UW 76-55.
OH MY — Martin Breunig flushed a monster dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. It was amazing. UW 76-55, 2:02.
FRUSTRATED? — Wroten took it upon himself to give a little dribbling display after he was bumped on the perimeter. He got fouled and missed the free throw. UW 72-50.
ASJ — Austin Seferian-Jenkins is in, which is probably a sign Romar believes this game is in the bag. UW 72-50, 4:40.
STILL IN CONTROL — The Huskies have attempted a season-high 29 three-pointers. Shurna is getting more aggressive and NU is starting to panic. The game is slipping away from the Wildcats. The Huskies are firmly in control and should be able to finish this out. UW 68-48, 7:23.
IT’S 20 — Got to like the Huskies’ passing. They’re making the extra pass. Wroten dished to Gaddy who had an open looked, but delivered to Wilcox for a three. UW 58-38, 11:46.
SO METHODICAL — The Huskies are making great decisions offensively. They’re being patient and not rushing shots. They’re getting offensive rebounds and making NU work defensively. UW 54-36, 12:49.
TURNOVERS AND THREES — The last few minutes have been filled with turnovers and three-pointers from both teams. NU has 13 turnovers and UW nine. UW has 24 three-pointers and NU 13. UW 52-36, 15:02.
BAD, GOOD AND BETTER — Wroten committed a turnover, but on the other end he leapt high for a block. Then he passed to Ross for an alley-oop dunk that got the crowd excited. On the next UW possession, Wroten passed to N’Diaye for a layup that was blocked. Wroten was upset with N’Diaye. UW 52-36, 15:27.
HOPPING MAD — NU coach Bill Carmody is stomping mad. Not sure what he’s upset about. Maybe it’s the Wildcats’ defense. At any rate, he called a timeout and is chewing out his team. There’s some reports that say Carmody is coaching for his job. He has a year left on his contract, but hasn’t taken NU to the NCAA tournament in 12 years. UW 44-33, 18:42.
SECOND HALF — Same starters.
HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — One of the better halves for the Huskies in a long time. Very exciting game so far. Lots of good action. Washington leads by seven, but they’ve executed on both ends of the court.
The Huskies are 5 of 21 on three-pointers. The season high is 26. I think they’ll get there. The school record is 34. There’s a good chance that will fall too.
Ross has 15 points and Wilcox nine.
Shurma is as good as advertised. He’s 4 of 5 from the field and 3 of 4 on treys for 14 points.
Simmons blew one defensive assignment, but he’s been solid on every since. Shurma is simply making tough shots. He’s that good.
Still Washington is doing what it has to do. It’s winning the battle on the glass 19-14 and has forced 11 turnovers. The Huskies have scored 18 points off of turnovers and eight on second-chance points.
N’Diaye has found a role and he’s got six points on dunks or layups. He should have 12, but he’s bobbled a few passes and blown a couple of scoring opportunities.
HALFTIME STATS — Click here.
HALFTIME — UW 39-32.

SUB — Hikeem Stewart is in for Wilcox, who has two fouls. UW 39-30, 35.5.
SPEED KILLS — Northwestern is having difficulty with UW’s speed on the defensive end. UW 37-30, 35.5.
MY BAD — Wroten just stripped N’Diaye of the ball. Ooops. UW 35-30, 1:27.
DROUGHT BUSTER — Ross hit a three, which was the first UW basket in eight possessions. UW 35-28, 1:39.
LOTS OF THREES — The Huskies are 4 of 18 on three-pointers. UW 32-28, 2:32.
SHORT BENCH — Don’t expect to see many reserves tonight. Got a feeling Lorenzo Romar doesn’t trust his freshmen backups in a game like this. UW 32-28, 3:15
ISOLATING N’DIAYE — NU is trying to take advantage of N’Diaye with a smaller man. UW 32-28, 3:53.
RUNNING — UW is on a 19-4 run. Gant is out with two fouls. UW 32-23, 6:17.
GETTING LOUD — N’Diaye dunked, Ross hit a three and Simmons drove the baseline for a layup. The place is getting a little crazy. Nice job by Gaddy on the last play to look off Wroten who asked for the ball on the right wing and passing to Simmons who had a better matchup. UW 32-23, 6:30.
GOOD CROWD — There’s decidedly more than 2,801 in the building tonight. I’m guessing 5,000. Maybe 6,000. UW 25-22, 7:46
MAN TO MAN — Northwestern went man to man for the first time tonight and Ross used a spin move to elude Hearn before elevating over another defender for a long jumper. UW 25-22, 7:46.
TRADING 3S — Shurna and Ross traded three-pointers before the Huskies forced another turnover. Ross was fouled intentionally. He made both free throws and the Huskies keep the ball. UW 23-22, 8:14.
BETTER DEFENSE —The Huskies have forced five of turnovers on the last seven defensive possessions. The pressure is starting to bother the Wildcats. NU 19-18, 9:15.
UH-OH — Shurna broke free from Simmons and drained a three-pointer. Simmons has to stay awake and he can’t leave Shurna. NU 17-9, 11:49.
SECOND SUB — Desmond Simmons is for Gant. NU 14-9, 13:06.
FIRST SUB — C.J. Wilcox is in for N’Diaye.
HECTIC START — The Huskies are dominating the glass 6-1. They have five on the offensive glass. Wroten has three rebounds and Ross two. However, the Wildcats are shooting 66.7 percent from the floor. NU 11-9, 15:25.
PLENTY OF SWITCHING — N’Diaye is essentially defending no one in the post. He’s kind of roving down low while everyone matches up outside. UW 7-6, 17:22.
ZONE — NU is starting in a 1-3-1 zone. N’Diaye has scored the first two baskets. UW 4-4, 18:12.
TIP — N’Diaye had a seven-inch height advantage over Crawford. UW got the tip.
MORE NEWNESS — This time freshman Alex Wegner is the pinball in the middle of the pre-game mosh pit.
NEW GUY ON THE MIKE — Russ Houghtaling has taken over the PA duties tonight. I hear he does the women’s games. Not bad. Lots of energy in his voice.
STARTING LINEUPS — No change for UW: Abdul Gaddy, Terrence Ross, Tony Wroten Jr., Darnell Gant and Aziz N’Diaye.
Northwestern: F John Shurna, F Drew Crawford, G JerShon Cobb, G Reggie Hearn and G Dave Sobolewski.
A WORD ON A REF — Eric Curry, the official who made the lane violation call in the Syracuse-UNC Asheville game is the lead referee tonight.
JARREAU UPDATE — Freshman Jernard Jarreau, who sprained his ankle, still is not healthy enough to dress. He’s out of the protective walking boot though.
ROSS UPDATE — Terrence Ross (hip flexor) is on the court and looks as if he’s going to play.
NICE CHATS — Had a good time talking to justinholidaycanplay and UWSonicfan. Knowledgeable dudes.
LATE-ARRIVING CROWD — It will be a better crowd tonight. I’m told at least 4,000 tickets have been sold. However, there’s construction on the Montlake bridge which will probably delay fans who are coming to the game. Got to admit, I got caught in traffic for about 30 minutes.
