Huskies hire ASU assistant Lamont Smith

Updated: 12:32 p.m.
Washington coach Lorenzo Romar is shaking up his staff and has added a second assistant in the past week.
This time he lured Lamont Smith away from Arizona State.
Doug Haller at the Arizona Republic spoke with Arizona State coach Herb Sendek Thursday morning who said Smith is leaving ASU to join the Huskies.
A source at UW confirmed the report although it is not immediately known how Smith’s addition impacts the staff.
He joins Brad Jackson, the former Western Washington coach, who was hired last Friday and introduced to the media Monday. He was unclear about his duties during his first press conference as a UW assistant.
The immediate future of the rest of the staff is also murky.
Jim Shaw has spent the past eight years at Washington and his primary duties includes scheduling, recruiting, scouting and working with the guards. He could move into a non-coaching position, which would be similar to what Washington State coach Ken Bone did with Jeff Hironaka. His new title is Director of Player Development/Special Assistant to the Head Coach.
Paul Fortier, a former UW standout forward, has spent the past seven years with the Huskies. He’s been grooming for a head coaching job, although there doesn’t appear to be any vacancies this late into the offseason. His primary duties include recruiting, scouting and working with the big men.
Here’s a look at Smith’s bio at Arizona State.
He was a 6-2 guard at San Diego from 1994-99. He was named the Toreros’ Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and served as the team captain his final three years.
He started his coaching career in 1999 as a graduate assistant under Romar at Saint Louis. He spent three years with Romar before joining Randy Bennett’s staff at Saint Mary’s where he worked for seven years.
Smith spent a short time at Santa Clara and was hired at ASU in 2008.
Smith is the second coach this week to leave the Sun Devils following Scott Pera who left to become the top assistant at the University of Pennsylvania.
