Thanks to loyal and longtime poster Skeptical Dawg for providing the video (below) of former Washington player Elston Turner Jr. who drained a last-second three-pointer to knock off Washington State 55-54 in a consolation game of the CBE Classic at Kansas City’s Sprint Center.
Turner finished with 10 points on 2-for-13 shooting. He was 2 of 6 on three-pointers and 4 of 4 at the line.
The Cougars (2-3) played without injured DaVonte Lacy. His replacement Dexter Kernich-Drew scored a game-high 16 points and Brock Motum had 15.
WEDNESDAY MORNING LINKS:
— Aaron Gordon’s mother Shelly Davis Gordon, is from the Seattle area and his father Ed Gordon grew up in Los Angeles and is a long-time friend of Lorenzo Romar. Davis Gordon spoke highly of the Washington coach in a Mercury News story about the 6-8 forward who is considering UW, Arizona and Kentucky. Davis Gordon said: “We have a long relationship with Lorenzo. He has been a guardian angel to our kids. Washington doesn’t quite have the national reputation of the other schools, so Aaron would probably be called upon to do a lot there. And he doesn’t shy away from that.”
— With the exception of Washington State, the Pac-12 teams that were embarrassed Monday bounced back Tuesday with impressive victories. No. 11 UCLA captured a 60-56 victory against Georgia. It might have been addition by subtraction for the Bruins who played without injured forward David Wear. Without him, Shabazz Muhammad made his first start in his second game and scored a game-high 21 points. Wear’s absence forced UCLA (4-1) to rely on a smaller lineup that included three guards, 6-9 Kyle Anderson, who plays like a guard, and Travis Wear as the only true post player.
— Muhammad tells Jeff Goodman at CBSsports.com that he’s about 10-15 pounds heavier than he wants to be. Goodman touches on some of the rumors that’s been swirling around Muhammad for years and his father Ron Holmes said: “There’s a lot of pressure on him, but I haven’t seen him buckle yet.”
— UCLA’s freshmen drew NBA comparisons from many of the 47 NBA scouts and executives at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
— USC beat Texas 59-53 in overtime thanks to Eric Wise who scored a team-high 13 points and Dewayne Dedmon hit a layup and a free throw with less than two minutes left in the extra period. USC improved to 3-1.
— Redshirt freshman Jahii Carson scored a game-high 21 points, Jordan Bachynski blocked seven shots and Arizona State outlasted Cornell for 64-53 win in front of 4,595 at Wells Fargo Arena. ASU improved to 3-0.
— Here’s the weekly Pac-12 men’s basketball release.
— Not necessarily Pac-12 related, but former Maryland great Len Elmore ripped his school for deciding to leave the ACC and move to the Big Ten.
