Saint Louis live game thread

IT’S OVER — Washington wins 66-61.

STILL RUNNING — UW 54-46, 7:19.

MINI-RUN — The Huskies are on a 6-0 run powered by Gaddy. He has six of UW’s 10 second-half points. He’s calling for the ball. he’s being aggressive driving to the basket. And he’s doing this against Jett, who hasn’t been able to counter. UW 39-33, 15:15.

GADDY TO THE RESCUE — Gaddy swatted McCall’s layup attempt. On the ensuing possession, he converted a difficult layup in traffic to give the Huskies its first lead since the early in the first half. UW 33-31, 18:21.

SECOND HALF — Same starters for UW. Jett replaces Barnett for SLU.

HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — There’s not much energy inside the arena. Maybe the late start has something to do with that. Maybe it’s the low turnout. Or maybe it’s Washington’s first-half performance. Whatever the reason, it’s kind of a blah feeling inside the building. You almost get a sense the Huskies are lucky to be tied at halftime 29-29.
Gaddy drained a long three-pointer as time expired and perhaps that will be the spark Washington needs to take control of the game in the second half.

Saint Louis controlled most of the first half with balanced scoring.

Wilcox is playing a measured, poised game. He has 13 points on 5-for-6 shooting. Gaddy has four assists and eight points. And Jarreau has six points on 3-for-6 shooting.

HALFTIME STATS — Click here.

HALFTIME — Gaddy hits a three-pointer as time expired to send the Huskies into the locker room tied 29-29 at halftime.

HOT START — Wilcox is 4 of 5 from the field for 10 points. Gaddy is hurting the Huskies defensively because he’s having difficulty containing Jordair Jett, a 6-1, 215-pound junior. Gaddy has a much better matchup on Barnett. SLU 25-23, 2:30.

THREE-MAN SHOW — Wilcox (seven points), JJ (6) and Gaddy (4) have all of the Huskies’ points. N’Diaye and Andrews are a combined 0-4. Washington has used a 2-3 zone on the past six defensive possessions, allowing two three-pointers. Billikens senior sharp-shooter Cody Ellis hit both shots. SLU 23-17, 6:04.

WHAT DID I SAY? — Coach Lorenzo Romar picked up his first technical of the season while protesting to an official after what looked like an over-and-back violation on SLU. Romar was yelling at an official across the court, but a ref standing about five feet away gave him a quick technical. The crowd went crazy. Romar has a look as if to say, what did I do? SLU 15-12, 11:45.

NOT SHY — JJ is looking for and taking the mid-range jumper at the elbow. He’s 2 for 3 on that shot. Wilcox is also having success in the middle of the SLU defense curling off of a baseline screen for a running floater in the lane. UW 12-11, 12:45.

FIRST SUB — Desmond Simmons is in for JJ. UW 6-5, 15:06.

LATE START, LATE ARRIVING CROWD? — There’s 4,000-5,000 folks here. That’s a kind estimate. UW 6-5, 15:31.
MATCHUPS — Gaddy is taking Barnett, Gaddy has McCall, JJ is on Evans, N’Diaye has Loe and Wilcox has Remekun.

SLU STARTERS — G Mike McCall Jr., G Jake Barnett, G Dwayne Evans, F Cory Remekun and F Rob Loe.

NEW STARTER — As noted in the previous post, freshman guard Andrew Andrews is making his first career start in place of Scott Suggs. The other starters are Jernard Jarreau, Aziz N’Diaye, C.J. Wilcox and Abdul Gaddy. Desmond Simmons started the previous game in place of Suggs, who is out with plantar fasciitis.
