Cal State Fullerton live game thread

IT’S OVER — Washington wins 74-72.

MORE GOOD DEFENSE — Leading by two points, Stewart deflected a pass and Andrews caught the ball. He was fouled and he’s at the line. He made the first one before UW called its last timeout. UW 72-69, 10.8.

GOOD DEFENSE — Stewart and N’Diaye did a nice job defending the pick-n-roll and forced Vaugn to make a bad pass that bounced off of Johnson chest and rolled out of bounds. The Huskies have the ball. UW 69-67, 38.4.

CRUNCH TIME — Wilcox sank a beautiful short jumper to put UW up 69-67. There’s 50.1 seconds left and the Titans have the ball. Expect Seeley to drive to the basket.

NO GADDY, NO PROBLEM — Gaddy is in the hallway receiving medical treatment. Meanwhile Simmons and Andrews are taking over. Simmons scored on a putback and Andrews has a layup. He also connected with N’Diaye who flushed a dunk and gave UW a 67-65 lead with 2:39 left.

GADDY HURTING AGAIN — Gaddy is limping off the court. Looks like his left knee is giving him problems again. He’s receiving treatment on the bench. CSF 63-61, 5:00.

FOUL TROUBLE — Deuce Johnson has four fouls. He’s on the bench. CSF 61-57, 7:23.

SLOW CONNECTION — Maybe you’ve noticed, but the blog is slow tonight. Not sure why. CSF 61-54, 7:52.

HUSKY TIMEOUT — Romar wisely takes a timeout. The Huskies are starting to lose some of the energy after making a furious charge. They pulled within a point (55-54), but the Titans have scored consecutive baskets. CSF 59-54, 9:39.
BONUS — The Huskies will shoot every time they’re fouled. UW is 16 of 22 at the line. CSF 55-52, 10:47.

COMING TO LIFE — The crowd is into the game now. So are the Huskies. They’re on a 14-5 run. CSF 55-51, 11:25.

GADDY HURTING — Gaddy is walking gingerly and looks to be favoring his leg. Meanwhile Wilcox drained a three-pointer that got the crowd involved. CSF 55-49, 11:28.

UNDER 10 — It’s the first time the Huskies have cut their deficit to single digits. CSF 52-44, 14:03.

TIMEOUT TITANS — Washington is playing much better in the second half, especially on the offensive end. Simmons has been able to get inside for a layup and N’Diaye has a dunk courtesy of Gaddy who zipped him a pass. Still, the Titans are hurting UW defensively when it draws N’Diaye out on high pick-n-rolls. It just creates a mismatch. N’Diaye gets caught in the middle and ultimately doesn’t defend anyone. And the inbound defense continues to be a problem. CSF 50-40, 16:48.

SECOND HALF — Simmons replaces Jarreau. The Titans go with their same starting lineup.

HALFTIME OBSERVATIONS — So this is what happens when Wilcox doesn’t play a great first half and misses 11 of 14 shots. The Huskies just have very few other options on the offensive end when Wilcox (seven points) is having an off night. It doesn’t help that Gaddy is 1 for 5 and has just six points.

Not sure why Washington doesn’t try to force feed N’Diaye in the post. If nothing else, maybe he picks up a couple of fouls and maybe gets a couple of CSF players in foul trouble.

The zone didn’t work and the man-to-man defense isn’t really working. The Titans are shooting 47.4 percent from the floor. They’re outrebounding UW 25-18. They have 10 assists, UW seven. And they only have six turnovers.

If nothing else, Washington has to commit itself to slowing down Seeley who has 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting.
The second-chance points and points in the paint are killing UW. The Huskies trail 15-9 and 22-12 in both stats, respectively.

Just talked to ness7 who came by to pick up his winning and this is his assessment. “We’re not getting bodies on people out of the zone and not boxing out. That’s painful.”

HALFTIME STATS — Click here.

HALFTIME — Washington trails 43-29.

SEASON DEBUT — Freshman walkon Quinn Sterling makes his season debut. He forced a turnover on his first possession, which got the crowd excited. CSF 42-29, 1:04.

FINAL STRETCH — The Huskies need to cut their deficit to single digits before halfitme. CSF 40-27, 2:11.
BACK TO MAN — The Huskies have switched back to a man-to-man defense. It’s worked on two possessions and forced errant layups. CSF 36-23, 3:53

UPSET — Gaddy has been upset with offensive execution of a few players. He barked at Hikeem Stewart and Jernard Jarreau. Now Gaddy is out. The Huskies are being outrebounded 13-9. CSF 31-20, 7:57.

POOR ROTATION — Romar yelled at Simmons after he appeared to miss a rotation and allowed an open three-pointers. Simmons made amends on the next play when he found Wilcox for a layup. CSF 25-18, 10:48.

FIRST SUB — Desmond Simmons is in. The Huskies have been playing a lot of zone, but it hasn’t helped. Seeley has two three-pointers. CSF 19-8, 14:55.
