Kameron Rooks picks Cal, Joshua Smith to Georgetown

Two centers with interest in Washington made their college choices and the Huskies came up empty.

Kameron Rooks, a 7-0 and 270-pound center from San Marcos, Calif., announced via twitter that he picked California over UW, Arizona and Arizona State.

It’s a significant loss for the Huskies because Rooks, a three-star prospect according to ESPN.com and Scout.com, was considered one of the top uncommitted big men on the west coast and UW’s 2013 class could use a post to join guards Nigel Williams-Goss and Darin Johnson. The Huskies are still in the hunt for 6-8 forward Aaron Gordon, a consensus five-star prospect.

In other news, former Kentwood High star Joshua Smith will transfer from UCLA to Georgetown, according to a report from Jeff Goodman at CBSSports.com.

The 6-10 junior played two-plus seasons with the Bruins before asking for his release in November after six games this season. He battled with conditioning and weight issues during his tenure with UCLA and his playing time decreased each season.

As a freshman, he averaged 10.9 points and 6.3 rebounds. Those stats dipped to 9.9 and 4.9 last season. This season, he averaged 5.2 and 4.2 in 13.5 minutes.

Due to NCAA transfer rules, Smith will need to sit out at least part of the 2013-14 season. He will be able to redshirt and will have at least a full season of eligibility.

Smith also considered Kansas. There were rumors he was interested in Washington, but it was never a realistic chance UCLA would allow a transfer to UW.
